Social Conventions

When visiting Zambia, one will notice that African culture and traditions remain prominent and there are various customs, folklore and traditions in different regions. Shaking hands is the most common form of greeting in Zambia. It is not unusual for people to continue clasping the other’s hands throughout the duration of the conversation. Many cities in Zambia are quite modernized, however, in more rural areas, the lifestyle and attire are still traditional. As a result, women should cover their shoulders and knees to avoid causing offence. Gifts are often given to visitors as a sign of gratitude, friendship or honour.

It is very important to remember that homosexuality is illegal in Zambia, as such, any person caught engaging in homosexual acts can be sentenced to imprisonment.

Language

There are over seventy-three dialects spoken in Zambia as a reflection of the various tribes found throughout the country. The official language however is English and all media and business are conducted in English. Most people speak or understand English in addition to their native language. The Bemba language is the next most commonly spoken language. (Other languages include Nyanja Tonga, Lavale, Lozi, Mambwe and Tumbuka).

Religion

Followers of Christianity (both Roman Catholicism and Protestantism) represent approximately 60% of the population of Zambia. There are smaller groups of Muslim and Hindu followers as well as a traditional animist belief minority.
