Zambia Geography and Maps
Zambia is a landlocked country that is bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo to the north and northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, Malawi to the east, Mozambique to the southeast, Zimbabwe to the south, Botswana and Namibia to the southwest and finally Angola to the west. The majority of the country is made up of a high plateau with peaks that average between 1060-1363m (3,477- 4,471 ft) above sea level. The Nyika Plateau on the eastern border is a mountain ridge with peaks averaging around 1,828m (6,000 ft) and some peaks reaching over 2,133 m (7,000 ft).
Apart from the mountain ranges, most of Zambia is flat and is broken up by smaller hills. It is characterized by the huge valleys of the Upper Zambezi and its major tributaries. The Zambezi River is the country’s namesake. Besides the Zambezi, the two largest rivers in the country are the Kafue and Luangwa the longest. Zambia is also home to three natural lakes, Bangweulu, Mweru and the southern end of Lake Tanganyika which is the second deepest natural lake in the world.
Victoria Falls is one of Zambia’s most well-known features. It is located on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Kololo tribe who lived in the area during the 1800s described the falls as “the Smoke that Thunders”. This nickname came from the fact that approximately 546 million cubic metres of water plunge over the edge per minute at the height of the flood seasons.
