What language is spoken in Korea?

The official language of Korea is Korean.

Is English spoken throughout Korea?

English is taught as a second language in schools. However, do not assume every individual you meet will be able to converse in English. 

What currency is used in Korea?

The currency used throughout the country is the won. Mastercard and Visa are very widely accepted, with American Express accepted as some high-end hotels and restaurants. 

Do I need a Visa to travel to Korea?

A Visa is not required when travelling to South Korea from Canada and The United States as a tourist for 180 or 90 days respectively. Passports must be valid for 6 months and an onward ticket is required. 

Is WiFi readily available?

With one of the most developed internet infrastructures in the world, accessing the internet is easy in South Korea. Wi-Fi hot spots and cyber cafes are easily found in the cities, although when travelling in remote areas please be aware that internet access may be harder to find.

Can I use my cell phone in South Korea?

Travellers should be able to use their mobile phones in South Korea's cities and urban areas, as coverage is good. As in other countries, rural and mountainous areas may have less mobile phone receptivity. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

Is it safe to drink tap water?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in many parts of South Korea unless otherwise marked. 

What are the public bathroom facilities like?

South Korea has a combination of squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It's a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer or soap as these are rarely provided in public toilets.

When is the best time to travel to Korea?

As Korea has four distinct seasons the best times to visit are in the spring (April to June) and fall (September to November). During the spring visitors will be able to enjoy the cherry blossoms and lots of sunshine. Fall is when the majority of major festivals take place and the colours are incredibly vibrant. 

Is there transportation within Korea?  

Korea has a very extensive transportation system which includes railways, buses, ferries and more. The T-Money card is used for public transportation within Seoul. Travelling by train is a good way to get around the country and a KORAIL pass can be purchased before travelling. 

Is Korea a family-friendly destination?

South Korea is a safe and clean country and very family-friendly. Activities that the whole family will enjoy include theme parks, Hello Kitty Cafe, N Seoul Tower and much more! We can create a custom itinerary based on your family's interests.  

How welcoming is Korea to LGBTQ travellers and families?

There are openly LGBTQ-friendly areas in Seoul and a few other cities have gay bars. Remote areas can be more conservative so it is best for all couples to be discrete regardless of sexual orientation. 

What are the main festivals and events in South Korea?

Most festivals and celebrations are in the spring or autumn. 

Chilseok is the biggest holiday similar to Thanksgiving and is held on the 15th day of the 8th  month of the lunar calendar. Baekje Cultural Festival is every October with over 100 traditional performances and events. Pusan International film festival is normally held in October. 

Is tipping required in South Korea

Tipping is not customary in South Korea however is appreciated.

Where are the best beaches in Korea?

South Korea has many world-class beaches. Seobin, Udo is South Korea’s only coral beach, Hajodae, Gangwon is known for surfing, Haeundae, Busaon is a blockbuster beach that hosts the Busan International film festival in October and is known for its nightlife and entertainment. For a quieter family-friendly destination Hamdeok, Jeju has shallow crystal clear water and soft sand perfect for young swimmers. 

What clothing should I pack?

Depending on the season you go, Summer is hot and humid so lightweight clothing and a rain poncho or umbrella for rain. Spring and Autumn are mild and sunny so comfortable clothes and a light jacket. Winter is cold with temperatures below freezing so warm winter clothing. Bring a bathing suit for beaches and dressy clothes if you plan on dining in upscale restaurants.
