English is a second language for most residents and is widely spoken throughout the country. 

What currency is used in Myanmar?

The currency used throughout the country is the Burmese kyat. Mastercard and Visa are usually accepted in hotels and services that cater to tourists. It is advised to carry local currency with you for other purchases.

Do I need a Visa to travel to Myanmar?

Both Canadian and United States passport holders will require a visa to travel to Myanmar. An eVisa can be acquired online prior to departing for your trip.

Is WiFi readily available?

Due to government restrictions on pricing and a lack of facilities and infrastructure, internet accessibility in Myanmar is limited in Yangon and Mandalay and almost non-existent outside of those cities. Most hotels will have internet access.

Can I use my cell phone in Myanmar?

It is possible to purchase a SIM card in Myanmar to utilize your mobile phone. But, we suggest you check with your cellular provider to know what your options are. You might be able to get an affordable roaming plan.   

Is it safe to drink tap water?

It is strongly advised NOT to drink tap water in Myanmar. It’s best to stick to boiled, treated or bottled water.

When is the best time to travel to Myanmar?

The best time to travel to Myanmar is between October and May, after the monsoon season when it is hot during the day and pleasant at night. Avoid travel between June and September as it is very wet. 

What are transportation options in Myanmar? 

Public buses will only run in larger cities such as Yangon and Mandalay. Taxis and cycle rickshaws can be found throughout the country as local transportation. Domestic flights will allow for quick travel. Travel by boat is also very popular as there aren’t a lot of roads. 

Is Myanmar a family-friendly destination?

Myanmar is a lovely destination for families! Children will be able to experience local life by cooking traditional foods or making pottery. Residents of the country are incredibly welcoming.

How welcoming is Myanmar to LGBTQ travellers?

Myanmar is not as progressive as other South East Asia countries but you’ll find locals are most welcoming in places like Mandalay, Bagan, Inle Lake and Yangon. Avoid public displays of affection, which are culturally taboo for everyone. Staying at international chains will allow for a friendly experience.
