What language is spoken in Costa Rica?

Spanish is Costa Rica's official language. 

Is English spoken in Costa Rica?

English is not widely spoken throughout Costa Rica. In major tourist destinations, you may find some residents able to converse in English.

What currency is used in Costa Rica?

The currency used throughout the country is the Costa Rican colon. US Dollars are also widely accepted.

Do I need a visa to travel to Costa Rica?

A visa is not required when travelling as a tourist from Canada or The United States for up to 90 days.

When is the best time to travel to Costa Rica?

The best time to visit Costa Rica is from mid-December to April when it is dry season and warm. The Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea are found in Costa Rica. In addition, elevation plays a role in some of its areas' climates.

Is there transportation within Costa Rica? 

There are a variety of options to get around Costa Rica such as public buses, shuttles and taxi services that can be found all throughout the country.

Is Costa Rica a family-friendly destination?

Costa Rica is a wonderful family vacation destination with plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy like zip lining, nature adventures, wildlife experiences and loads of beaches to have fun. 

How welcoming is Costa Rica to LGBTQ travellers and families?

Costa Rica’s laid-back attitude contributes to this country being one of the most LGTBQ-friendly destinations in Central America and definitely one of the most progressive. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1971 and same-sex marriage became legal in May 2020.  

Electricity

In Costa Rica, the common voltage is 120 V. The frequency is 60 Hz. The plugs and sockets are A / B type

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in Costa Rica with the exception of restaurants that typically add a service charge that includes a 10% gratuity, so be sure to check your bill. Tipping etiquette is similar to that in Canada and the US of 10-15% for bartenders and waitresses, $2-5 for tour guides dependent on the size of the group, and $1-2 dollars for hotel staff like doormen and housekeeping.

Costa Rica has many festivals throughout the year; Fiesta de Los Diablitos (February), Carnival of Puntarenas (February) and the National celebration of Nativity are 3 of the most important festivals in this country.
