Food

The cuisine of Croatia is incredibly varied because it stems from two very different cultural backgrounds. Due to its long coastline, Mediterranean traditions and seafood are very important to Croatian dishes, while its position in Central Europe means it benefits from the filling and comfort food of the continent.

Popular dishes include:

Pršut: This is home-cured ham that is often served with paski sir (a famous cheese) as a starter.

Kulen: This is a sausage from Slavonia that is flavoured with paprika and is quite spicy.

Pasticada: A beef-based dish that is cooked with wine and prunes, Pasticada is very popular in the Dalmatia region.

Strukli: This dish is common to the Zagreb and Zagorje hills. It is a pastry and cheese dish that becomes a cross between cheese soufflé and lasagna.

Gran: This is a soup that has haricot beans and sausage that is flavoured with paprika.

Brodet: This is made up of seafood that has been stewed in red wine and spices.

Salata od hobotnice: This is an octopus salad made with potatoes, onions, parsley, olive oil, crushed garlic and lemon juice.

Drink

The wine industry in Croatia is constantly growing and Dingač is a favourite red wine, while Malvazija is a great white wine. When it comes to beer, most Croatians prefer light lagers with popular brands including Karlovacko and Ozujsko.
