Food

Czech cuisine has been greatly influenced by its neighbouring countries. Each region has its own specialties, but traditionally, meals are based on meat, dumplings, potatoes and rice.  Soups are another important part of Czech cuisine and they come in many different flavours and varieties. Several desserts that are popular in Central Europe originated in the Czech Republic.

Popular dishes include:

Guláš: A favourite meal in the Czech Republic, this dish is a hearty stew that combines beef, onions and spices. Beef may be substituted with pork or sometimes game, and vegetarian options are also available. Guláš is often accompanied by knedle (a fruit-filled dumpling) or bread.

Roast pork with dumplings and cabbage: This dish is often considered the most typical of all Czech meals. The cabbage can be either green or red and can be served cooked or pickled.

SviÄkova: Another national dish, SviÄkova consists of beef tenderloin with sour cream sauce.  It is served with cranberries and dumplings.

Bramborák: Since potatoes are easy to grow in Czech Republic, they accompany many meals. Bramborák is a potato fritter that is flavoured with garlic and herbs.

Kulajada: A traditional South Bohemian soup, Kulajada consists of water, cream, spices, mushrooms, egg, dill and potatoes.

Drink

The Czech Republic has a long history of brewing, with one of the oldest breweries in the country dating back to 1379. There are more than sixty breweries in the country while the most popular brands are Pizenský Prazdroj, Zàmecky, Budějovický Budvar and Bernard. The first vineyards appeared in the country around 300 AD and the best wine comes from South Moravia. Finally, Becherovka is a traditional liqueur that is made from all-natural ingredients.
