Social Conventions

Shaking hands is the customary form of greeting throughout Hungary and first and last names are usually used for introductions. Family is very important to Hungarians and it is not uncommon for various generations of extended family to live together. Finally, table manners can be quite formal in Hungary.

 

Language

Hungarian is the official language of the country, however, English and German are also spoken to some degree around the country.

 

Religion

Hungary is a predominantly Christian country with more than half of the population belonging to the Roman Catholic faith. Other religions represented in Hungary include Calvinists, Lutherans, and Greek Catholics as well as Christian, Greek Orthodox and Jewish minorities.
