Luxembourg Food & Drink

  • Luxembourg Food & Drink

Food

Proportional to the number of inhabitants, Luxembourg is the country boasting the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants. It is mainly in the capital where the choice of gastronomic delights is most diverse. In the surrounding countryside, venues such as inns or taverns in the middle of the forest often offer a more rustic and traditional cuisine, which lacks nothing of the quality and taste of the great restaurants.

Popular dishes include:

Bouneschlupp: green bean soup, to which carrots, onions, leeks, celery, potatoes, milk or cream and smoked bacon can be added;

Judd mat Gaardebounen: smoked neck of pork with broad beans;

Kuddelfleck: tripe served breaded or with a spicy tomato sauce;

Stäerzelen: a dish made of buckwheat flour with smoked bacon and sometimes cream;

Drink

Due to its many gastronomic specialities and delicious local wines, the valley of the Moselle is a must for visiting gourmets. Wine, mostly dry white wine, and sparkling wine is produced in Luxembourg along the north bank of the Moselle which has a winemaking history dating back to the Romans. The main varieties are Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Auxerrois, Gewurztraminer, Rivaner, Elbling, Pinot Noir, and Cremant de Luxembourg.

Beer, a popular drink in Luxembourg, is produced locally at three large breweries as well as in a couple of smaller establishments. Most of the beer brewed in Luxembourg is lager but there are also a number of special beers as well as beers. Since the 2000s there has been a resurgence of local microbreweries creating craft beer.
