Luxembourg History

  • Luxembourg History

Luxembourg was founded when the Count of Ardennes named Siegfried acquired Luxembourg Castle in 963 AD. Around the castle, a small town developed which grew into a small country. In the 1300s Luxembourg became a power in Europe. On June 9, 1815, Luxembourg was given the status of Grand Duchy by the Congress of Vienna. Although its recorded history can be traced back to Roman times, the history of Luxembourg proper is considered to begin in 963. After occupation by Revolutionary France, the 1815 Treaty of Paris transformed Luxembourg into a Grand Duchy in personal union with the Netherlands.
