Social Conventions

The Dutch are a very direct people and sometimes visitors mistake this for being rude, yet they expect such straightforwardness from visitors to the country, too. Shaking hands is the traditional way of greeting people and casual clothes are generally acceptable unless in business or in smart restaurants or functions.

 

Language

Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands, however, English, German and French are spoken. In the province of Friesland, the Frisian language is spoken.

 

Religion

Roman Catholicism is the most followed religion in the Netherlands, representing approximately 30% of the population. Other religions represented in the country include the Dutch Reformed Church, Calvinism and Islam.
