Food

In the final decades of the 19th century, Brazil opened its doors to a great deal of immigration and many people came from places like Italy, Japan, Spain, Germany and Portugal joining an indigenous population as well as a large African population. This resulted in a melting pot of cultures that greatly influenced the culinary styles available in Brazil. Various tastes are represented in Brazil and the cuisine found in the country is held to high standards. Root vegetables like cassava and yams as well as tropical fruits are staples of local cooking.

Popular dishes include:

Feijoada: Originally of Portuguese origin, this is considered the national dish of Brazil and it is a rich stew made from a variety of ingredients including pork, sausage, pigs ears and tails with black beans which are then served over white rice, chopped kale and orange slices.

Moqueca: This dish is popular in the Bahia region and consists of fish or other seafood made into a stew that is cooked with palm oil, coconut milk, onions, garlic, tomatoes and cilantro.

Acarajé: This is incredibly popular street food and is found around northeastern Brazil. It is made of deep-fried bean fritters served with shrimp, okra, onions and peppers.

Churrasco: In Brazil, churrasco is the term for a barbecue. This dish is therefore mixed grilled meat that is served with manioc flour which is made from cassava and is gluten-free.

Caruru de Camarão: This is a shrimp and okra gumbo that is cooked with manioc meal in some parts of Brazil and is served with ground roasted peanuts in other parts of the country.

Drink

Wine made in southern Brazil is considered to be of quite high quality while Brahma brand beer is the most popular throughout the country.
