Classic Egypt Tour with Alexandria: Cairo to Cairo

Duration
11 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,073

Explore ancient temples and bustling modern cities on this tour through the centres of Egypt. See artefacts from the tomb of King Tutankhamen in Cairo before exploring the Great Pyramid of Giza and the ancient capital of Memphis. Then head south for a cruise along the Nile River from Luxor to Aswan, marveling at the wealth of temples and ruins, before heading up to Alexandria for a glimpse of its famed library.

This 11-day tour shows off the ancient and modern highlights of Egypt, from Cairo to Aswan and Luxor and finally Alexandria.

Your trip to Egypt begins in Cairo, the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Middle East. Cairo is large, crowded, and a little overwhelming to first-time visitors, but that’s only because it bursts with history and has been central to Islamic, Christian Coptic, and Jewish culture for over a thousand years. The locals call the city Umm ad-Dunya (Mother of the World) and it earns that moniker. Head to Tahrir Square in the centre of the city to get your bearings and then visit the Egyptian Museum to see mummies and artefacts taken from the Tomb of King Tutankhamun. Then head to the west side of the Nile to see Giza and the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis. Giza is one of the glories of the ancient world. Tour its ancient sites, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza, the only remaining member of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, and the enigmatic Sphinx. At the Solar Boat Museum you can see the elaborate funeral boats of the pharaohs and ponder at these ancient rites involving the afterlife.

After exploring Cairo and its bustle of people and history, head south for a river cruise along the Nile aboard the M/S Amwaj Living Stone. Aboard this comfortable river vessel, you’ll explore Luxor, a city of splendour situated on the banks of the Nile. Luxor was the site of ancient Thebes, the pharaoh’s capital from the 16th to the 11th centuries B.C. Today, it seems like an open-air museum, bursting with a wealth of marvelous ruins and stunning history. Explore the famed Temple of Karnak and Temple of Luxor before venturing into the Valley of the Kings and Queens to feel like an explorer and marvel at the gilded tombs of the pharaohs.

Head further south to Edfu to see the Temple of Horus, one of Egypt’s best-preserved ancient sites and an indispensable archaeological site for Egyptologists. Continue to Aswan to close out your river cruise, exploring the Philae Temple and the ancient stone quarries that supplied the stones for the pyramids.

Fly back north and head west to Alexandria, the second largest city in the country and one of the ancient centres of civilization. While many of the ancient wonders have disappeared since the time of Cleopatra, the city remains a fascinating blend of Mediterranean climate and Egyptian pedigree. The city flourished as a commercial seaport for the better part of a century and today it remains the country’s link to the calmer rhythms of Europe and the sea. Tour the El Montazah Gardens and the disc-shaped Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which recreates the iconic Library of Alexandria for the modern day, before slowing down your rhythms and enjoying the city’s charming café culture. Close out your Egyptian vacation with a day trip to El Alamein to tour the war museum and see where the Allies won a major victory in 1942.

This exploration of Egypt takes you through the country’s storied past and vibrant present for a complete experience of this ancient nation.

Cairo, the Triumphant City, is the glorious capital of Egypt, the cradle of civilization and the beacon of religion. It is the largest city in the Middle East and Africa, and lies at the centre of all routes leading to and from the continents of Asia, Africa and Europe. Greater Cairo extends on the banks of the River Nile to the south of its delta. Here the Nile divides into two tributaries, the Rosetta and the Damietta. It is the city where the past and present meet. On its East Side stands the evidence of 2000 years of Islamic, Christian Coptic and Jewish culture still flourishing to this day. On its West Side lies the Ancient Egyptian city of Memphis (Giza), the renowned capital of the Old Kingdom and the site of the Pyramids, the only wonder of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World surviving. Indeed, a journey through Cairo is a journey through time, a journey through the history of an immortal civilization.

Day 5

Sail from Luxor to Edfu

Early in the morning sail to Edfu via Esna lock. The small town of Edfu is situated on the west bank of the Nile, 56 km south of Esna and 105 km north of Aswan. Today, Edfu is an important centre for sugar production and pottery making. The site of Edfu was known as Wetjetser hor (classical name Apollinopolos Magna), the place where the god Horus was worshipped and the ancient mythological battle between Horus and his traditional enemy, Seth, took place.

Day 6

Sail from Edfu to Aswan

An exhilarating carriage ride takes you through town to the Temple of Horus, the Falcon God. Continue sailing to Kom Ombo to visit the Graeco Roman style Temple of Sobek. Standing serenely on a hilltop, the site offers an incredible view over the Nile.
The main monument at Edfu is the Ptolemaic Temple of Horus on the edge of the town. The temple is perhaps the best preserved in all of Egypt and ranks second behind Karnak, simply because of its immense size. At the temple's entrance stand two large black granite statues of Horus who is depicted as a falcon. The elaborate carvings on the walls of the temple are beautiful as if carved just yesterday. Inside the temple is a small sanctuary where the priests of the day offered the best parts of the animals to the gods.
Kom Ombo is located on a bend in the Nile River about 50 km north of Aswan. Located on the east bank, Kom Ombo is home to an unusual double Temple of Sobek built during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The temple is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris (Horus the Elder). Despite being badly damaged, the temple is a beautiful sight as you approach from either direction on the river, particularly as sunset nears and the colours change.

Meal Plan Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 7

Aswan

This morning's sightseeing includes Aswan's High Dam, the ancient Granite Quarries and the Temple of Philae. After lunch, sail around Elephantine Island and the Botanical Gardens.
Aswan, Egypt's sunniest southern city and ancient frontier town, is located about 81 miles south of Luxor and has a distinctively African atmosphere. Its ancient Egyptian name was Syene. Small enough to walk around and graced with the most beautiful setting on the Nile, the pace of life is slow and relaxing. Days can be spent strolling up and down the broad Corniche, watching the sailboats etch the sky with their tall masts or sitting in floating restaurants listening to Nubian music and eating freshly caught fish.
