Grand Zimbabwe

Duration
13 Days
Prices From:

Discover the magic of Zimbabwe on this small group tour as you venture into the country's most famous National Parks including Hwange and Matopos. Learn about Zimbabwe's fascinating history as you visit the 900 year old Great Zimbabwe ruins and take in the country's breathtaking natural beauty.

This 13-day trip through one of Southern Africa’s least understood, yet most diverse and beautiful countries begins at Victoria Falls, taking you to Hwange National Park, Great Zimbabwe, and many of the country’s other highlights.

Known as ‘The Smoke That Thunders,’ Victoria Falls separates Zimbabwe from Zambia with the world’s widest sheet of falling water. The mighty Zambezi plummets into the gorges below, each of which is a former precipice of the falls, which have slowly receded over thousands of years. You can see today where the next gorge is being slowly but steadily cut by an endless barrage of water. It’s one of the world’s great natural wonders, and you’ll have time to explore it, before a sunset cruise on the Zambezi.

Lake Kariba may not be one of Africa’s natural wonders, but it is one of the world’s largest man-made lakes and now supports its own ecosystem, which you’ll explore from Masumu River Lodge. Hwange National Park, your next stop, is one of nature’s own treasure troves, with large herds of zebra, elephant, buffalo, and giraffe. Enjoy a full day exploring to maximise your animal sightings, before going on to a private concession near the park. Here, you’ll visit the Painted Dog Conservation Centre and learn more about the endangered African Wild Dog.

Head to the Matobo Hills and learn about the complex local history, shaped by the people who thrived in this dramatic landscape. The national park also protects both white and black rhinos, and the world’s densest leopard population. You’ll track rhinos in the wild and visit the graves of industrialist Cecil John Rhodes, and Ndebele king, Mzilikazi. Your appreciation for Zimbabwe’s history will deepen at Great Zimbabwe, the largest ruins site in sub-Saharan Africa. With a design based on the palace of the Queen of Sheba, this immense city was home to the Bantu civilisation until the 15th century. But this area remains a cultural hot spot in Zimbabwe today, particularly at Bushman Rock Estate, a winery operational since the mid-1900s. See the ancient rock art in the caves here and enjoy high tea on the veranda.

Your last full day in Zimbabwe concludes with a three course dinner with matching wines from Bushman Rock, before transferring to Harare International Airport the following day.

Sable Sands has 11 traditionally thatched rondavels. Part of the ancient royal hunting grounds of King Lobengula, the lodge was later visited in 1991 by her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Phillip, so it's no wonder the designed bedrooms have added luxury complete with private terrace, and en suite bathroom, making your rondavel the perfect blend of ancient culture, nature and modern convenience.
