This tour visits Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Axum to Gondar, and Simien Mountains for an all-over view of Ethiopia's fascinating past.

Spend 8 days discovering one of Africa’s richest histories, that of Ethiopia. Start in the capital, Addis Ababa, by paying a visit to the Ethnological Museum, where you’ll learn about the many tribes that make up this fascinating country. You’ll also stop in at the National museum, which houses a plaster cast of ‘Lucy’, the 3.2 million-year-old Hominid found in Ethiopia’s Awash Valley.

Fly on to the town of Lalibela, perched 2.6 kilometres above sea level, with eleven monolithic churches carved from pink granite. Each is unique however, making a fascinating stop before flying on to Axum. Walk in the footsteps of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon, who is said to have brought the Ark of the Covenant to the city. Many traces of this rich history remain today including the crowns of Ethiopian Kings, housed in the church of Saint Mary of Zion.

Your next stop is Ethiopia’s first capital, Gondar. Visit the castle of Fasilidas and the UNESCO World Heritage listed Debre Birhan Selassie church. Then take a break from history and enjoy Ethiopia’s natural beauty in the Simien Mountains, an excellent place to view Ethiopia’s endemic wildlife. Make your way to Bahir Dar to see two more natural wonders, Lake Tana and the Blue Nile waterfalls. The falls plunge 45 metres across a 100 metre width, and endlessly reward exploration.

Your final day offers you a half day boat trip on the Lake, visiting the 14th century monasteries of the Zege peninsula before you depart.

The city of Axum as early as the 10th century B.C was the city in which the Queen of Sheba resided. It is recounted that the son of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon brought the Ark of the Covenant to Axum and it remains there to this day, preserved in a sanctuary. Axum was the capital of the long Axumite reign, one of the oldest African empires, and represented a crucial connecting-point between Africa and Asia for almost a thousand years. A visit is organized to the steles: granite monoliths dating from pre-Christian times and decorated with symbolic engravings. During the Italian occupation of Ethiopia, Mussolini had taken one of them to Rome. It has since then been returned and re-erected in Axum. There is also a visit to the church of Saint Mary of Zion, which contains the crowns of Ethiopian kings and other treasures.
