Kilimanjaro Climb: Marangu Route 7 Day

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,155

Also known as the “Coca Cola” Route, Marangu is the easiest and busiest route on the mountain. Each route has its own degree of difficulty, but the view from the top is certainly worth it.

This is the most popular route to the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain – the highest free standing mountain in the world. Scale almost 20,000 feet on this 7 or 8 day trek from Moshi.

Your route includes scenic detours past rainforest waterfalls and picturesque plant life before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Staying in dormitory style huts, this is a highly demanding climb. Be prepared for rapid changes in climate and other conditions as you ascend. Consider an extra night at Horombo Hut (3,700m altitude) to help you acclimatise.

Day 1

Moshi

On arrival in at your hotel in Moshi the rest of the day is at leisure. When flying, we strongly suggest you wear / carry on you, your boots, wet weather gear and cameras - these are crucial for your climb, and you do not want to risk losing them in the hold. Make sure you have your yellow fever certificate with you - you will be asked to produce it on arrival in Tanzania (and in some cases you might need to show it on arrival back, as well).

Day 2

Mandara Hut

After an early breakfast a senior guide will do your climb briefing, after which you will depart for the National Park Gate (approx 1 1/2 hour's drive) where you will meet your guide and porters. After the formalities at the gate have been completed, you will start your walk through the spectacular tropical rain forest.
You will reach Mandara Hut (2 700m) after approximately 4 hrs of hiking from the Park Gate. There is a detour on this route to waterfalls in the rain forest, which is well worth following - discuss with your guide before you set off. All meals are included during the climb, and your guide/porters will prepare it for you.

Your personal baggage limit is 12 kg for the climb. Remember that you will not see your luggage from morning until night, it is important to keep all your day gear with you especially rain gear and water.

Your accommodation is in dormitory style chalets. There are no shower/bath facilities while doing the climb and toilets will be long drops. You will be provided with bowls of warm water each morning, on request, to wash with.

It is suggested that at night you try and sleep next to an open window, or at least persuade other climbers to leave the window open for air/oxygen.

It is advisable to 'walk high - sleep low' - i.e. every evening, after a short rest at the camp, walk up another few hundred metres and return to camp for the evening. It helps with acclimatisation.

A steep, sometimes wet, 20 min walk through the upper part of the rainforest, followed by a 2km section of tall giant heather interspersed with large clumps of tussock grass, around 15km or 5 hrs from Mandara Hut. The vegetation will have changed to stunted clumps of heather, the 'everlasting' flowers and short tussock grasses. Lobelia and groundsels occupy the wetter areas. All meals included.

Summit Day

Today is a very long and strenuous day. Drink lots of fluid before you start, you will be very thirsty by the end of it - if can you manage, carry 3 litres of fluid with you.
You will be woken at about 23:30 or 00:00 with tea and a biscuit. Put on all your clothing ready for the final ascent.
Please ensure you take a good torch and spare batteries. A 4-5 hour slow hike up increasingly steep sections to Gillman's Point (5 690m). From here a 1-2hrs walk around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After the assault on the peak descend to Horombo Hut.
