KwaZulu Natal Beach & Wildlife

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,597

See a different side of the country on this South Africa tour, combining the beautiful beaches of the Durban region with a wildlife safari experience, all in the historic lands of the Zulus.

This 7-day South Africa vacation combines two of the country’s greatest natural assets – its gorgeous beaches, and amazing wildlife.

Settle into your hotel, located in Kwazulu Natal, then get to know Durban on a full day tour. You’ll discover why this is one of South Africa’s favourite cities as you explore the beachfront promenade, the historic city hall and university, and the impressive harbour. Browse the Warwick Triangle markets, where around 6000 vendors offer Zulu clay pots, beadwork, and other traditional craft items. Take a moment to relax in the Durban Botanic Gardens, followed, if you wish, by a cable car ride to the top of Moses Mabhida Stadium for a view over the city. You’ll also visit uShaka Marine World, home to the world’s fifth largest aquarium. Take note of any sights or parts of the city you’d like to explore in detail, as you’ll have a full day at leisure to do so.

Transfer to the White Elephant Safari Lodge in time for some afternoon game spotting. Your next two days are yours to spend as you wish, and the opportunities for some prime game viewing are plentiful. Embark on the traditional ‘game drive’, enjoy a guided walking safari, or go out on the water for a different view of these magnificent creatures. Specifically, these include antelope, hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of birds.

Day 2

Umhlanga

If you want to get to grips with Durban, this full day tour is for you. Ample time to discover the cultural and historical contrasts of this city, before spending time at the world class attraction, uShaka Marine World. Your tour begins as you travel along the brand new Golden Mile, the revitalised beachfront promenade which hugs the beckoning beaches of Durban viewing the newly upgraded Point Waterfront. You move through the City, viewing the majestic City Hall, and enjoying its humorous history. You continue to the small craft harbour viewing the 8th largest harbour in the world. Drive past the sugar terminals and very busy harbour warehouses on your way to the University of Natal, Durban Campus where you view lovely sights of the harbour down below. Then visit the bustling African/Indian Markets at Warwick Triangle, home to 9 distinct markets developed around Durban's largest public transport interchange and where approximately 6000 street vendors ply their trade, to an average of 460,000 daily commuters, an authentic experience. Visit the fascinating Phansi Museum, home to the largest publicly accessible collection of Southern African artefacts and traditions, including beadworks, headrests, Zulu clay pots and various other treasures. (Closed on weekends and entrance fee for own account). From culture to nature, you visit the peaceful Durban Botanic Gardens founded in 1849, a treasure trove of massive trees from Asia, Africa and America, and a magnificent orchid house. You then proceed to an icon of Kwazulu Natal, the Moses Mabhida Stadium where you will have the option of experiencing the cable car ride (own account) to the top of the Stadium for that phenomenal view of Durban and its surroundings. Afterwards, you are going to sit back and be entertained at uShaka Marine World, where the dolphin, seal and penguin shows are not only spectacular, but fun and light-hearted too.

Day 3

Umhlanga

Enjoy the day at leisure. Spend the day exploring this cosmopolitan Queen we call Durban as there is a lot that this city offers. Stylish cafes, wonderful cultural offerings and excellent shopping opportunities, much of which are clustered in fashionable areas within the suburbs. Thanks to Durban's stadiums and venues, golf courses and a swathe of butter-yellow sand, it's a great city for spectator sports and outdoor enthusiasts. The downtown area is a buzzing, gritty grid comprising grandiose colonial buildings and fascinating art deco architecture all moves to a distinctly African beat. For beach-lovers, the beachfront remains a city trademark for daytime activities.

Day 5

Safari Activities

The lodge has an assortment of activities for you to do over the next two days, from an early morning boat cruise, viewing spectacular bird-life or a late afternoon sunset excursion. This activity is highly recommended as there are few reserves in South Africa where 'game drives' can be done on water. The 15,000 hectare Lake Jozini provides the focal feature of Pongola Game Reserve and reminds one of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. Boat Cruises are a wonderful alternative to exploring the flora and fauna of our wildlife sanctuary. Sightings of herds of antelope, hippo, crocodile as well as an enormous variety of bird species are common.

Also enjoy a safari experience the old fashioned way, on an open vehicle. Game drives are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles, either in the early morning or late afternoons by a professional guide who will show you, not only the larger game but also the many varied and interesting smaller species in the game reserve. The lodge also offers guided walks in the reserve for the more adventurous type. Being on foot, is not only a more energetic way of experiencing the Bush but also provides a 'close-up' invigorating encounter with Nature. The sounds, smells and minute detail of the wilderness become much more apparent on a guided walk. The duration and speed of your walk will be tailored by your professional guide to suite your fitness and stamina.
