Embark on a family-friendly journey to South Africa. Explore the bush and spot elephants, lions, and ostriches while staying at two luxury game lodges in the country’s north. Then connect to Cape Town to explore the nation’s most beautiful city and deep-dive into its diverse culture.

This 10-day South African vacation takes you to two famous and family-friendly game reserves in South Africa’s north before connecting to Cape Town.

Your trip to South Africa begins in Madikwe Game Reserve, the fifth largest game reserve in the country. Bordering Botswana along the northern border and known for its large wild dog population and many species of birds, Madikwe Game Reserve is a great place to spot incredible African wildlife. You’ll stay at Madikwe Safari Lodge, a 5-star safari lodge in the heart of the reserve. With its plastered walls, rustic wooden beams, and dry-packed stonework, Madikwe Safari Lodge looks like a termite mound jutting out of the African earth. The lodge itself offers an intimate bush experience and incredible views of the African plains and the Dwarsberg Hills. Each day, you’ll head on two game drives to see the incredible animals of the reserve, including the Big Five and fascinating birds like vultures and ostriches. Your kids can also take advantage of many on-site activities, including their own bush walks and cooking classes.

After a few days at Madikwe Game Reserve, connect east to Marakele National Park, located in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains. Set on a transitional zone between the dry west and the humid east, Marakele has a variety of landscapes and animal diversity. You’ll stay at Marataba Safari Lodge, a 5-star lodge set on 23,000ha of private land within the park, and explore the landscape of plains, bush, rivers, and mountains. On your two daily game drives, you’ll spot rare animals such as sable reedbuck and endangered Cape Vultures. Spot lions snoozing in the shade and elephants crossing the veld. While you explore the bush, your kids can learn how to track animals by spotting their dung, and go on a star gazing excursion once the sun goes down. In between game drives, cool off in the swimming pool, cozy up at the fireplace, and enjoy the picturesque grounds lit up by lanterns.

Close out your South African vacation by heading to Cape Town, the nation’s most gorgeous city, located on the Cape of Good Hope. Sitting in the shadow of Table Mountain, Cape Town is breathtaking and full of cultural diversity. Spend your time in Cape Town exploring the city’s unique neighbourhoods, from the colonial buildings of the city centre to the cobblestoned streets of the Malay Quarter and the street art and bright colours of trendy Bo-Kaap. You can also explore the nearby Cape Peninsula, with its breathtaking coastal drives, picturesque lookout points, and penguin colonies. After a few days at leisure, you’ll connect to the airport to return home.

Day 1

OR Tambo to Madikwe

On arrival at OR Tambo, you will be met by Goway's representative before your light aircraft transfer to Madikwe Safari Lodge.
Bordering Botswana in South Africa's North West Province, the lesser-known Madikwe Game Reserve is the fifth largest reserve in South Africa. It is home to a wild dog reserve, abundant wildlife including the world-renowned Big Five and over 300 bird species such as vulture, ostrich and the large kori bustard. The landscape is characterised by vast grasslands, woodlands, and the rugged Tshwene hills sheltering a host of wildlife.
On arrival at the lodge, you will meet with your ranger to discuss your activities for the next three days. Activities are tailor-made to suit your children's ages and your interests.
Children's activities include cookie baking and spoor casting (guides take the children into the bush, teach them how to find and follow tracks, and then make a mould of the tracks that they found). Also included are scavenger hunts (kids are given a checklist and supplies, and race to find everything on the checklist to collect a special prize at the end) and rock painting. In summer children enjoy pool games, bugs CSI (nature walks where they are taken into the bush in search of bugs and to learn how they help in nature) and roasting marshmallows while laying around a camp. Board games are played in the afternoon after all the other activities are ended.
The beauty of your stay here is that it is customised around the family. Two game drives are included daily (with refreshments and snacks). Other specialist activities on offer are bush walks, wildlife lectures, bush breakfasts and picnic lunches.

With its earthy plastered walls, dry packed stone work and rough wooden beams, Madikwe Safari Lodge appears to grow out of the rust-red African setting like a gigantic termite mound.

Offering a commanding view of the game-rich plains, each room overlooks the majestic panorama of the Dwarsberg Hills, as well as the Marico River, a green ribbon cutting through the landscape.

Both splendid and serene, yet as warm and approachable as an African sunset, Madikwe offers an intimate bush experience with a humorous twist.

Madikwe to Martaba

On the morning of your fourth day, you will take a scheduled air-transfer to Marakele National Park.
Meaning 'place of sanctuary' in Tswana, Marakele National Park is just that. Set in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains, the park's position in a transitional zone between the dry western and moist eastern regions of the country, ensures great natural diversity. Majestic mountains, grassy hills, deep valleys and stately, often rare, trees create a peaceful natural environment in which elephants, rhino, big cats and a variety of birds thrive, including one of the biggest colonies of the endangered Cape Vulture in the world. All of the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds (including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with more than 800 breeding pairs) have settled here.

Here too your stay is completely flexible. Children's activities include family safari drives, bush orientation, dung tracking, bug CSI, star gazing and fun evening games. For the adults, two game drives per day are included. Or you can choose to do a water safari on the 'Miss Mara'. Bush walks are also on offer and last approximately 1 and a half to 2 hours, depending on the fitness level of guests.

More Quarters offers the combination of apartment living with the service and hospitality of a hotel. The apartments are ideally located just off Kloof Street, referred to as the 'heart of Cape Town' by the locals. This is partly due to the area being relatively untouched by mainstream tourism, hence adding to the authenticity and value of the Kloof Street address.

The ability to walk to both restaurants and boutique shops provides guests with an experience where one becomes part of the city's cosmopolitan way of life. There are exclusive and casual retailers and eateries all within walking distance of More Quarters.

Access to other tourist attractions is easy and without congestion especially during peak season periods. Table Mountain is at your doorstep, Lions Head is a stone's throw away and the beautiful beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay are just over Kloofnek - the opportunities are endless!
