Madagascar Rainforests & Rivers

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,833

Your first night on the island of Madagascar will be spent in the capital city of Antananarivo, ‘Tana’, as the locals call it. Next will be the opportunities to see the largest lemur, the Indri, and a visit to Lemur Island with its habituated lemur species. Lastly, you will walk the Sacred Forest in search of ring tailed lemurs, and then experience the traditions of the local Antandroy tribe.

This 10-day trip through Madagascar is about more than just lemurs. Discover the unique ecology as well as the local culture that has created an island nation that captures the imagination.

Your guide will meet you in Antananarivo – or ‘Tana’ as the locals call it and transfer you to your hotel. In the morning, head to Andasibe rainforest park and Pennet Special Reserve, home to the world famous Indri lemurs – the world’s largest species of lemur. Since they cannot survive in captivity, this is the only place to see these magnificent (and extremely cute) animals. They’re one of a dozen species of lemur that populate Pennet, but compare that to over a thousand orchid species, and you realise the lemurs are far from the only piece of Madagascar’s nature puzzle.

The following day, head to Mantadia National Park, shared between various lemur species, as well as a wide variety of native birds, mammals and reptiles rarely seen (if at all) elsewhere. Pay a final visit to Lemur Island before returning to Tana.

Fly on to Fort Dauphin, far in the country’s south, and transfer to Mandare River Camp. Explore the region after dark with a night-time Zenavo Forest walk. A whole new range of species brings the forest to life at this time. The following day, cross the Mandrare River and explore the forest in daylight, spotting yet more lemurs, including the endangered (and extremely playful) Verreaux’s sifaka. In the afternoon, take a break from Madagascar’s most famous furry residents to discover the local Antandroy tribe, visiting their ancestral tombs with your expert guide.

Fortified with fresh coffee, explore the Spiny Forest, wandering through the ‘tentacles’ of octopus trees while keeping your eyes peeled for lemurs and other species. The afternoon is spent relaxing by the river, where the wildlife frequently comes to you. In the evening, enjoy a close encounter with Madagascar’s native culture with a traditional dance performance. Return to Tana for one last evening before your departure.

Day 3

Andasibe (Perinet Reserve)

After breakfast, enjoy a visit to the 810 ha Perinet reserve with a local guide in search of the Indri. With a barely visible tail, black and white markings and a surprised teddy-bear face, this lemur is one of the few animals in the world that cannot survive in captivity. There are another 11 species of lemur to spot as you walk through the rainforest. You may find a troop of Grey Bamboo lemurs, Common Brown lemur, Diademed Sifaka and Black and White ruffed lemur. Birdwatchers should look out for the Velvet Asity, Blue Coua and Nuthatch Vanga and many more endemic species. Perinet is home to many reptiles, invertebrates, and some of Madagascar's over a thousand orchid species.

A night walk will be organised in late evening in the forest surrounding the reserve with a local guide. You will see a variety of nocturnal lemurs: mouse lemurs, white footed sportive lemur, fat-tailed dwarf lemur, as well as the woolly lemur.

Day 4

Andasibe (Mantadia National Park)

After breakfast you will head to Mantadia National park (1 hour drive) with a picnic lunch. Look for some of the 11 lemur species in this stunning park including the Indri Indri, diademed sifaka, grey bamboo lemur and white ruffed lemur. While the trails are slightly more difficult the rewards are great as the forest is taller, wilder and less crowded than Perinet. There are an abundance of birds including the Scaly Ground Roller, Pitta-Like Ground Roller and Red Breasted Coua. To do justice to Mantadia you need to spend a whole day in the park. This is a naturalist's goldmine with many seldom seen species of mammals, reptiles and birds. Picnic by the Sacred Waterfall. Hike back to the vehicle and return to the Lodge for a relaxed evening.

Day 5
