Migration Safari

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,479

This African safari is the experience of a lifetime. Follow the Great Migration, a natural phenomenon where over a million wildebeests and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles migrate north each year.

This 7-day adventure through Tanzania showcases the annual migration that has made Serengeti National Park so famous around the world.

Begin in Arusha, which sits at the base of Mount Mero near famous Kilimanjaro. A sprawling city that thrives off safari tourism, Arusha is also a diplomatic hub that holds the headquarters of the East African Community.

Near Arusha is Tarangire National Park, which has the second highest concentration of wild animals after the Serengeti. During the Great Migration, animals crowd the park, eager to drink from the Tarangire River that divides the park in two. During the dry season, Tarangire boasts the largest group of elephants on the planet. It’s also home to the magnificent baobab trees, which soar above the African plains with their iconic clustered tops and smooth bark.

The world’s largest open, inactive volcano, Ngorongoro is also one of Africa’s finest wildlife conservation areas. It is home to over 25,000 large animals including lions, zebras, wildebeests and gazelles. It is also one of your best opportunities to ever see a black rhino, the rarest of the “Big Five” game animals, which include elephants, lions, buffalo and leopards.

Serengeti National Park is the crown jewel of Tanzania, known for the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra. Beyond the millions of migrating herbivores, the park is home to all of the “Big Five”—more than 3,000 lions and 1,000 leopards call the Serengeti home—as well as cheetahs, hyenas, baboons, wild dogs and giraffes. Bird watchers should also keep their eyes peeled for over 500 species that inhabit the plains, including flamingos, ostriches and exotic secretary birds.

This safari gives you a first-hand experience of one of the world’s great displays of animal life.

Day 5

Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, drive to the Serengeti National Park, undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere. Arrive for lunch at your lodge and later this afternoon you will have a game drive until sunset. Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, also a world heritage site and recently proclaimed a 7th worldwide wonder, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeest's trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant's gazelle.

The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania's greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the southeastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat. This evening you will enjoy a sundowner at the Mukoma Hills.

Day 6

Serengeti National Park

A full day is spent in the Serengeti with a picnic lunch. There is more to Serengeti than large mammals. Gaudy agama lizards and rock hyraxes scuffle around the surfaces of the park's isolated granite koppies. A full 100 varieties of dung beetle have been recorded, as have 500- plus bird species, ranging from the outsized ostrich and bizarre secretary bird of the open grassland, to the black eagles that soar effortlessly above the Lobo Hills. As enduring as the game-viewing is the liberating sense of space that characterizes the Serengeti Plains, stretching across sunburnt savannah to a shimmering golden horizon at the end of the earth. Yet, after the rains, this golden expanse of grass is transformed into an endless green carpet flecked with wildflowers. And there are also wooded hills and towering termite mounds, rivers lined with fig trees and acacia woodland stained orange by dust. Popular the Serengeti might be, but it remains so vast that you may be the only human audience when a pride of lions masterminds a siege, focused unswervingly on its next meal.
