Day 4

Marrakech – Skoura – Dades

As you depart Marrakech, the distant haze gradually resolves into a jagged mountain range, none other than the High Atlas Mountains, which dramatically thrust upward from the surrounding plain. Our chosen route traces the very path once traversed by ancient caravans, laden with gold and precious wood from the far reaches of the Sahara, destined for Marrakech.

Enchanting scenery unfolds as we journey through small villages, each tiered against the landscape. Amongst oak trees, walnut groves, and intermittent snow patches, we ascend to the Tizi n Tichka pass, standing tall at 2,260 meters. Beyond this pass lies an entirely different vista: the lunar landscape of the Anti-Atlas.

Continuing our adventure, we skirt past Ouarzazate, pausing for a leisurely lunch (at your own expense). Our tour then leads us to another verdant oasis: the Skoura Palm Grove, nestled between arid crests and desolate plateaus. Here, the air is fragrant with the essence of roses.
Kelaa des Mgouna awaits, renowned for its proximity to the Valley of Roses and its vibrant Rose Festival. During this three-day celebration, held annually in May, a local girl is crowned the Rose Queen. The most coveted product? Eau-de-rose, distilled and exported by two factories in the area. Remarkably, it takes approximately three thousand kilograms of rose petals to yield a single liter of precious rose oil.

Our journey continues to Boulmane Dades, the gateway to explore the spectacular Gorges of Dades. Here, a lush carpet of vegetation contrasts against massive rock formations. For the adventurous, there's even the option to hike with mules (at your own expense).

As the day draws to a close, we settle in for a delightful dinner and overnight stay at our chosen hotel. The High Atlas Mountains have woven their magic, and we're immersed in their captivating tale.

Day 5

Dades – Tinghir - Merzouga

s we resume our journey, our first captivating stop is Tinghir. This oasis town boasts an extensive palm grove, where ksour (fortified villages) cling to rocky hillsides, and a mysterious decaying Jewish quarter whispers tales of bygone eras. For generations, Tinghir has served as a vital rest point for nomadic Berber tribes traveling from the northern mountains toward the vast desert.

A hidden gem awaits: a 19th-century adobe mosque, nestled within the crumbling ksour. Photography enthusiasts find solace here, capturing the essence of time. But Tinghir's allure extends beyond its architectural wonders.

A mere 15 kilometers away, the Gorges of Todra unfold--a captivating scene where a crystal-clear river emerges from the earth. Enormous walls, their hues shifting with the sun's passage, create a magical effect. These 300-meter-high cliffs harbor over 150 bolted climbing routes, attracting adventurers who scale their rugged faces throughout the day.

Continuing our journey, we pass through Erfoud and Rissani. In Erfoud, a visit to the Musée des Oasis beckons if time permits. Rissani, once the final stop on the great southern caravan route, witnessed gold and slave auctions in the 1800s. But even before that, the bustling city of Sijilmassa held sway. Its ruins now lie opposite Rissani, echoing tales of grandeur.

Soon, Merzouga comes into view--the gateway to the Sahara. Here, the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise like ancient leviathans. Hop aboard a powerful 4WD Land Rover, surfing the sandy sea toward our desert camp. As dawn breaks, savor a camel ride across the golden sand dunes of Merzouga.

Dinner awaits, served under a Berber tent, where the desert's whispers blend with starlight. Our journey through Morocco's enchanting landscapes continues

As you pedal through this oasis, let the serene surroundings envelop you.

Next, we'll transfer to Ouarzazate, tracing the path along the Draa Valley. If hunger strikes, consider a stop in Agdez for lunch (at your own expense). Then, onward to Ouarzazate, a city originally established as a French garrison in the 1920s. Today, it thrives as a regional trade hub, renowned for its exquisite pottery and intricate carpets.

Our first stop in Ouarzazate: the Taourirt Kasbah. This historic fortress, once a grand residence, now stands as a testament to time. Its simple clay houses and crenellated towers, adorned with geometric motifs, evoke a sense of wonder. As you explore, imagine the tales whispered by the ancient walls.

After breakfast, enjoy the city tour of Marrakesh, the "Red City", a majestic place filled with palaces, gardens, markets, and mosques. Upon arrival, you will first stand by the Koutoubia Mosque with its 282 ft minaret, an architectural landmark dating back to the late 12th century. You will continue to the 19th century stunning Bahia Palace and discover the intricate work done by the local artisans to decorate this splendid home built by a powerful Vizir for his harem. The building includes one hundred and fifty rooms, countless courtyards and interior gardens, a veritable labyrinth of corridors, a Koranic school, hammams, a harem, stables. From there we will start exploring artisan quarters and the colorful souks to interact with the real life of Marrakech people. Continue to Dar El Bacha Museum of Confluences, built in 1910 and was the residence of Thami El Glaoui, named Pasha of Marrakech by Sultan Moulay Youssef in 1912. Before sunset we will be strolling in the square of which the city is so famed, Jemaa El Fna. Located at the entrance of the Medina, this triangular square is surrounded by restaurants, stands and public buildings, and provides everyday commercial activities and various forms of entertainment.
