Mountain Gorilla Encounter: Singita Kwitonda

Duration
4-5 Days
Prices From:
US$ 7,958

Drive through Rwanda, one of the most picturesque countries in Africa, to Volcanoes National Park, the area made famous by Dian Fossey... the home of the world's last surviving mountain gorilla population.

Live one of Africa’s most iconic and unique experiences as you visit a family of wild mountain gorillas. Spend 4 to 5 days exploring Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, enjoying at least one gorilla trek (you may add a second one for an extra charge on the 5-day itinerary).

Begin with an in-depth tour of Kigali, including a sobering but necessary visit to the Genocide Memorial putting Rwanda’s all too recent past into perspective. Then transfer to Ruhengeri, your base for an unforgettable gorilla trek. Only 80 gorilla permits are issued each day, and no more than 8 trekkers are permitted per group. You’ll be matched with travelers of a comparable fitness level and given a full briefing before setting out, and you’ll have to be patient, as it can take several hours of walking to reach the gorillas. Your reward? A life-changing encounter with one of nature’s most gentle and majestic creatures in its natural habitat. If you’re booking the 5-day itinerary, you’ll have the option of embarking on a second trek at additional cost before returning to Kigali.

Day 2

Kigali City Tour and Genocide Museum Visit

On arrival you will be met and transferred to Ruhengeri via a Kigali City Tour and Genocide Museum Visit.

The Kigali City Tour offers you an in-depth view of Kigali, past and present, bringing you the genuine heartbeat of the city. The city, which is inhabited by one million people, is divided into three districts, Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge. Founded in 1907 as a German settlement, Kigali did not become the capital until Rwanda's independence in 1962 when it replaced the colonial seat of power in Butare. The Kigali City Tour begins as a historic journey through the city with a guided tour from the first modern building from which the capital city was first founded, to the rapidly growing neighbourhood's that are changing the face of the city.

The Genocide Memorial site is a grim reminder of the senseless massacre of innocent's lives in 1994. The memorial is the final resting places for more than 250 000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi, a place for remembrance and learning. The Memorial also sheds light on other massacres including Cambodia, the Balkans and the Holocaust. Rwanda's recovery, growth and development is incredible, a true testament to humankind's resilience.

After your tour, transfer to your Lodge.
