Nile River Cruise: MS Mayflower

Duration
4-5 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,424

Visit historic temples, tombs, and ruins as you sail the mighty Nile River between Luxor and Aswan. You’ll explore legendary temples in Luxor, Edfu, and Aswan in the company of expert Egyptologists and see the engineering feat of the Aswan High Dam. This Nile cruise departs in either direction.

This 4 to 5 day Egyptian vacation takes you on a cruise along the Nile River from Aswan to Luxor, or vice versa. It features deluxe accommodations in either a deluxe or executive cabin, small group tours, and is an ideal add-on to a visit to Cairo.

Board the MS Mayflower for a journey along the Nile River. The MS Mayflower is a 5-star river vessel that’s fully-equipped to make your time along the Nile as comfortable as possible. Enjoy the luxury amenities of your deluxe or executive cabin and access to the on-board lounges and restaurants, such as the Pasha Restaurant, on-board pool, and large viewing decks.

The 4-day journey from Aswan to Luxor begins in Aswan, where you’ll board the MS Mayflower and visit the Aswan High Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric dams in the world. This feat of engineering dams the Nile and created Lake Nasser, the world’s largest artificial reservoir. Afterwards, you’ll see the unfinished Obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut and the Temple of Philae, with its large columns and complicated hieroglyphs. From Aswan, sail to Kom Ombo to see the unique double temple, with additions from both the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The temple is dedicated to both the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris. Continue to Edfu to see the Temple of Edfu, with its massive pylon entrances and dedications to the god Horus. That evening, enjoy an Egyptian Galabeya Party on board.

Continue through Esna and make for Luxor, a resort city centred on two of Egypt’s greatest temples. You’ll spend the day exploring this city that is often considered one of the world’s greatest open-air museums. In the morning, visit the Valley of the Kings and Queens to see the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, El-Bahari, and the Colossi Memnon. In the afternoon, you’ll explore the two pillars of the city, the Temple of Karnak and the Temple of Luxor. At the end of your exploration, you’ll disembark and continue to your next destination.

The 5-day journey from Luxor to Aswan travels in the reverse direction, adding an extra day in Aswan, during which you can explore the granite quarries that supplied the stone for the pyramids and sail around Elephantine Island on a traditional Nile boat known as a felucca. You may also have time to visit the Aga Khan Mausoleum.

Day 3

Sail Edfu to Kom Ombo and Aswan

Kom Ombo is located on a bend in the river Nile about 50 km north of Aswan. Located on the east bank, it is home to an unusual double temple built during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The temple is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris (Horus the Elder). Despite being badly damaged, the temple is a beautiful sight as one approaches from either direction on the river, particularly as sunset nears and the colours change. Overnight in Aswan.

Aswan, Egypt's sunniest southern city and ancient frontier town located about 81 miles south of Luxor, has a distinctively African atmosphere. Its ancient Egyptian name was Syene. Small enough to walk around and graced with the most beautiful setting on the Nile, the pace of life is slow and relaxing. Days can be spent strolling up and down the broad Corniche, watching the sailboats etch the sky with their tall masts, or sitting in floating restaurants listening to Nubian music and eating freshly caught fish.
