Signature Madikwe & Kruger Safari: Madikwe, Johannesburg & The Sabi Sands

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
US$ 9,164

DELUXE | TAILOR-MADE: Explore two of the best game reserves in South Africa, as well as Johannesburg. Start in Madikwe Hills Game Reserve, where you’ll head on game drives along the northern border. Next, explore the history of apartheid and liberation in Johannesburg. End your journey in The Sabi Sands Game Reserve for more game drives in a beautiful environment.

This 9-day South African safari vacation takes you to Madikwe Hills Private Game Reserve and Sabi Sands Game Reserve, with a visit to Johannesburg in between. It features deluxe accommodations and small group tours.

Your journey begins in Johannesburg, where you’ll fly to Madikwe Hills Private Game Reserve, a conservation range on the northern border with Botswana. Madikwe is a malaria-free zone that restricts access to ensure intimate experiences with the wildlife and plenty of wide-open spaces. Stay at Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge for 3 nights, enjoying the 5-star accommodation with a health spa and gym on site. You’ll head out on morning and afternoon game drives during your two full days at the reserve. Search for the Big Five in the sparse bushveld or go on a birding excursion to see some of the more than 350 distinct species. You’ll also have a chance to see wild dogs in the reserve, which are exceedingly rare across the country.

Connect back to Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa and a city’s whose diversity is particularly emblematic of the Rainbow Nation. You’ll head on a Journey to Freedom tour to trace the legacy of Nelson Mandela and other men and women who fought to end apartheid. Weave your way throughout the city from the Kliptown Open Air Museum, where the Freedom Charter was adopted in 1955, to Regina Mundi Church, where activists held underground meetings, to the Hector Pieterson Museum. Swing by the Mandela House before lunch in Soweto and then pass through ritzy Diepkloff before reaching the Apartheid Museum, an award-winning interactive museum that delves into the dark history of South Africa.

From Johannesburg, continue on to Sabi Sands Game Reserve, a private game reserve in Greater Kruger National Park. Stay at Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve, a 5-star property with eight glass-fronted suites, each with sundecks and a heated rock plunge pool. Enjoy pampering luxury for three nights and spend two full days on morning and afternoon game drive throughout Sabi Sands. Venture through the private reserve with the highest density of big game in South Africa. That means you’ll have a good chance of spotting the Big Five, including the elusive leopard.

After a game drive on your final morning, head back to the airport to connect to Johannesburg for onward travels.

Day 5

Private Full Day Journey to Freedom

Today you enjoy a full day Journey to Freedom Tour. Many South Africans gave much, some gave all, to achieve a truly democratic South Africa. Come join on this full day tour that shares some of the journey, pain and struggle of those heroes; witness the places, experience the diverse museums where these momentous, tumultuous years have been so well documented. Your day begins at the Kliptown Open Air Museum where delegates met in 1955 to adopt the Freedom Charter, now the cornerstone of the Bill of Rights and the South African Constitution. The next significant stop is the fascinating Regina Mundi Church, site of so many of the underground meetings of the then banned political parties. Standing in here, you can feel the tension, picture the intensity, the strain on the faces of those unthinkably brave souls, committed at any cost to changing the way of life of a nation. Your next stop is the Hector Pieterson Museum, where you start to unravel the cause of the devastating riots, before travelling past Mandela House, where you have the option of visiting this small museum (own account). Lunch in Soweto at a local restaurant. Then continue your journey driving past the affluent suburb of Diepkloof, which is in stark contrast to the lower income areas seen earlier in the day, en-route to the iconic Apartheid Museum. This is an interactive voyage of discovery, one which takes you from the dark days of whites only privilege, through to Nelson Mandela's historic release. The Apartheid Museum is a multimedia experience, with documentary film snippets, texts, sound clips and live accounts, recapturing life in the dark days of South Africa. It's a fascinating tour, filled with tales of bravery and sadness, but ultimately, it's a story with the right ending.
