Sossusvlei Shuttle from Swakopmund or Windhoek

Duration
3 Days
Prices From:
US$ 679

Walk across sand dunes and marvel at the austerity of nature on this Namibia safari. Acquaint yourself with urban life in Swakopmund or Windhoek before heading out to the Namib Desert to see the massive sand dunes of Sossusvlei and the iconic blackened trees of the Dead Vlei.

This 3-day nature safari takes you to one of the oldest deserts on the planet.

Your Namibia safari begins in Swakopmund, Namibia’s adventure capital on the Atlantic Coast, or Windhoek, the westernized capital to the east. From these two points of departure, head out to the Namib Desert in search of the fantastic sand dunes and clay pans of Sossusvlei. As the top tourist attraction in the country and an UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan boasting massive red sand dunes, the largest of which rises 325 metres into the air. While these dunes usually constitute one of the driest ecosystems on the planet, they occasionally flood to produce a stunning oasis lake in the middle of sand and wind. Climb one of the numerous sand dunes and marvel at this living desert. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll see the dunes in the midst of change, either constantly reshaping due to the high winds or flooded due to recent rains.

Near Sossusvlei is Dead Vlei, another salt pan in this living desert. While it used to be an oasis, changing water flows transformed Dead Vlei into a tree graveyard, where blackened, dead acacia trees line the desert floor. The stark blackness of the trees against the white of the salt floor and the amber dunes is a stunning sight, one you’ll never forget long after your Namibia vacation ends. Your Namibia tour will also take you through the Sesriem Canyon, a remarkable cleft in sedimentary rock, carved by years of water and erosion.

This Namibia safari is an opportunity to engage with nature at its most severe.

Day 2

Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei, Sesriem Canyon

An early morning rise with a snack before leaving enables you to arrive at Sesriem, the Park's gate at around sunrise. The route leads along and also across the Tsauchab dry riverbed, which has found a way through the dunes until it reaches the clay pan -- the Sossusvlei. After a good rainy season -- about every 7 to 10 years -- the Tsauchab River runs in full flood and fills the Vlei with water. For months it remains here and offers a sensational scenery with a prolific birdlife.

The early morning sun offers spectacular pastel colours in the star-shaped dunes. This is the highlight for the keen photographer. Your first stop will be at Dune 45 before continuing on to the Sossusvlei. Climb one of the dunes -- there are plenty -- and you might be overwhelmed by the sight of the dynamic and living desert!

Breakfast will be served in form of a picnic under one of the shady camel thorn trees, before you continue to the base of the 'Dead Vlei'. It is quite a walk over patches of dunes that are crossing your way. When you arrive you will be paid off for your efforts -- the scenery is awesome!

You will then visit the Sesriem Canyon, a 30 metre deep rift, before returning to your base for a late lunch.

During the late afternoon, a sundowner-drive to the natural marble mountains on this 25,000 ha private nature reserve is included.
