Victoria Falls, Chobe & Okavango Delta

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,994

Explore some of Africa’s most famous spots. Begin with a visit to Victoria Falls, one of seven natural wonders. Next spend time in Chobe National Park before entering the Okavango Delta.

Botswana and Zimbabwe host many of southern Africa’s greatest natural wonders, including Victoria Falls, Okavango Delta, and the world’s largest concentration of African elephants, found in Chobe National Park. This 7 day round trip from Johannesburg makes the perfect addition to your South African adventure, or just a wonderful trip on its own.

Victoria Falls sends the mighty Zambezi River plunging 50 metres into the dramatic gorges below. Take a walking safari into the rainforest to explore lesser seen corners of the area. Then enjoy a sunset cruise on the Zambezi to see a different side of ‘The Smoke That Thunders’.

Just 100 kilometres from the Falls is Chobe National Park, home to Africa’s largest elephant population, including Kalahari elephants, the largest of these majestic animals. You can also spot lions, leopards and African buffalo, along with over 450 species of birds.

Finally, the Okavango Delta is a large inland delta, formed within the expansive Kalahari basin. This is an area teeming with wildlife, including nocturnal creatures such as honey badgers and African wildcat. You’ll learn about the art of tracking and have the chance to explore on foot to meet even more animals.

Day 1

Johannesburg to Victoria Falls

You will depart Johannesburg mid-morning for your flight to Victoria Falls. Upon arrival into Victoria Falls you will be met by Goway's local representative, Comair, and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of your day is at leisure.

The famous Victoria Falls measure some 1,688 metres (5,538 feet) across, with a drop of 100 meters (328 feet). The estimated volume of water going over the falls in the wet season is 545 million litres per minute. The Victoria Falls are Zimbabwe's most famous attraction. Named by the locals as the 'Smoke that Thunders' or Musi O Tunya, these are the largest and probably the most beautiful waterfalls in the world!

Day 2

Victoria Falls

After breakfast you will be picked up for a guided tour of Victoria Falls. No surprise why Victoria Falls is one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World. You'll understand it instantly as you tour the Zimbabwean side, for there are numerous spectacular vantage points along the width of the Falls, and at the sight of this astounding gift of nature. You'll walk through the permanent, beautifully misty rainforest which flanks the Falls, stopping to marvel at the principal sites as it cascades to the depths below: the Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, the Boiling Pot, Cataract Island and Livingstone Island. You'll stand and watch, feel and listen to the spray and thunderous noise, as millions of litres of water tumble over the Falls into a series of narrow gorges below.

You will return to the lodge to relax, or why not go into Victoria Falls town to view the markets for African curios?

This afternoon, you will be picked up for your Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi. Put your feet up, sip a sundowner as the light gently fades, and let our tranquil wildlife cruise float you along the Zambezi River above the Falls. You'll have the finest vantage point from which to watch hippo, crocodiles and other animals which come down to the river's edge in the early evening, to slake their thirst. You're in the first-class seats, that's for sure, and while you're sipping your cocktail and enjoying snacks no further movement is required on your part. You'll be captivated by the sun's dying rays as they cast a burnt-orange glow which shimmers on the river. Take another sip in this golden setting - cheers!

After your sunset cruise, you will be transferred back to your hotel; the rest of the evening is at your leisure.

Here you will find an abundance of wildlife concentrated in relatively small areas. Chobe National Park is famous for its elephants. Like clockwork, the elephants travel along their well-worn paths to drink on the shores of the Chobe River.

Today you will enjoy an afternoon game activity either in a 4x4 land vehicle or a river cruise.

Day 5

Okavango Delta

Today you will be transferred to the airstrip for your air transfer into the heart of the Okavango Delta which measures 15,000 square kilometers (5,792 sq. miles) with some 1,800 square kilometers (695 sq. miles) of which is part of the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. The Okavango River itself rises in western Angola, and ultimately flows into the Kalahari. The Okavango Delta is one of Africa's most baffling mysteries. Born among the mists and lushness of Angola's fertile highlands far away to the northwest, the Okavango River bursts its banks and millions of litres of water flow into the scorched desert instead of the sea. The web of channels created by this odd quirk of nature never stays the same because no two floods are ever the same. The delta is set in the Kalahari basin. The floodwaters travel 1,300 kilometres to revitalize a vast network of plant and animal life. This unusual environment is home to 36 species of mammals, 200 species of bird and 80 species of fish.

Depending on your camp choice, there are many activities to explore the Okavango, either by Mokoro, a traditional dug-out canoe, by boat or wilderness walks on nearby islands and game drives.
