Cruising Antarctica in Style: Silver Explorer Ushuaia to Ushuaia

Duration
11 Days
Prices From:
US$ 10,300

Embark on one of the world’s great adventures by heading to the white continent at the ends of the Earth. As you cross the Drake Passage and explore the frozen landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula, you’ll encounter all manner of penguins, seals, and whales, and follow in the footsteps of the world’s most illustrious explorers.

This 11-day Antarctic vacation takes you from Ushuaia in the deepest south of Argentina to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Your journey to Antarctica begins in Ushuaia, Argentina’s tourism base for Tierra del Fuego (Spanish for “The End of the World”), the southernmost region of South America. As such a tourism base, Ushuaia caters to adventurers the world over, so you won’t have a problem staying entertained while waiting to board your cruise vessel. You can explore historical sites explaining the town’s history as a penal colony or grab a pint at the world’s southernmost microbrewery before embarking on the Silver Explorer to begin your Antarctica vacation.

Silver Explorer is a luxury expedition vehicle that’s made to withstand all the pressures of travel to the South Pole, whether the harsh winter temperatures or the pressures of ice in the water. It’s also ideally-equipped to help you explore the Antarctic Peninsula, with a fleet of zodiacs ready to speed you across Antarctic waters while on excursions. While travelling at sea, you can spend your time taking advantage of the activity centres on board, enjoying a drink in the Explorer Lounge, relaxing in the Sagara Spa, or beefing up on your history in Tor’s Observation Library.

As you make your way to Antarctica, you’ll cross the Drake Passage, the turbulent waterway that sits between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands. Although the waters can be rough, the combination of high winds and water currents attract a multitude of birds and whales who come to feed on the fish and plankton. The Drake Passage offers a bit of adventure before you cross the South Pole and land on the Antarctic Peninsula.

The Antarctic Peninsula is a landscape of icebergs, glaciers, freezing waters, and more penguins, seals, and whales than you can see in a lifetime. You’ll spend your days on the peninsula exploring the South Pole, breathing in the chill air and witnessing the majesty of icebergs and frozen waterways. You can focus on the wildlife and become an expert at identifying Adelie Penguins and Weddell Seals, or you can explore the landscape, whether that means taking a zodiac out onto the water to get alongside calving icebergs or hiking icy stretches of remote terrain. After exploring the peninsula, you’ll return back across the Drake Passage en route to Ushuaia.

No matter how you spend your days in Antarctica, you’ll join an upper echelon of elite Globetrotters by embarking on this adventure.

Day 1

Ushuaia

At 55 degrees latitude south, Ushuaia (pronounced oo-swy-ah) is closer to the South Pole than to Argentina's northern border with Bolivia. It is the capital and tourism base for Tierra del Fuego, the island at the southernmost tip of Argentina. Although its stark physical beauty is striking, Tierra del Fuego's historical allure is based more on its mythical past than on rugged reality. The island was inhabited for 6,000 years by Yamana, Haush, Selk'nam, and Alakaluf Indians. But in 1902 Argentina, eager to populate Patagonia to bolster its territorial claims, moved to initiate an Ushuaian penal colony, establishing the permanent settlement of its most southern territories and, by implication, everything in between.
