Sandakan is the gateway to wonderful nature centres including the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, Turtle Islands Park and the Gomantong limestone caves. An unparalleled area for nature lovers.

The historical city of Sandakan is the second largest city in the state of Sabah.  Located on the east coast of Borneo, Malaysia, Sandakan is known for being the gateway for eco-tourism destinations in Sabah such as the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, Turtle Islands Park, and the archaeological Gomantong Caves.

On arrival at Sandakan airport, transfer to your hotel for overnight.

Start the next day with a 45 minute speedboat ride to Selingan Island which is part of the Turtle islands Park. Check into your simple lodge. The day is free to go swimming, snorkeling or just explore. After dinner, observe the famous Green and Hawksbill Turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs.

Next morning leave Selingan Island and return to Sandakan from where you will continue by road to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where the orangutans are rescued from the surrounding plantations and rehabilitated to allow them to go back to living in their natural habitat, the jungle. One highlight is the feeding time when they are up close.  You will also have a short walk in a rainforest.

After lunch, depart for Sukau where the 560 kilomtere/350 mile long Kinabatangan River passes through this scenic area. En route, you will visit the Gomantong Caves, famous for the bird’s nests that are the basis of the Chinese delicacy, bird nest soup.  Check into a lodge and then take a cruise along the river in search of wildlife of which the best known is the strange looking Proboscis monkey.

Start early the next day with a 1 and a half hour boat trip on the Kinabatangan River to view more wildlife including beautiful tropical birds. Return later to the lodge for breakfast and then head back to Sandakan for overnight.
