Borobudur Extension from Bali

Duration
2 Days
Prices From:
US$ 738

Set against the stunning backdrop of the volcano Mount Merapi, the temple sites around Yogyakarta make an ideal 2-day extension trip from Bali.

Originally built in the 8th century, Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world. Still an important pilgrimage spot for worshippers today, the site's precise origins remain a mystery. Rediscovered in 1814 by British governor Thomas Raffles, the site consists of nine individual platforms, decorated by 2,672 relief patterns and 504 Buddha statues.

Similarly, and also rediscovered around the same time by Raffles, Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia. Over 240 temples originally stood here, including the incredible 47-metre-high Shiva temple, which towers over the site today.

A visit to these two extraordinary spiritual sites is highly recommended when visiting Bali or when travelling throughout Indonesia.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Yogyakarta

Transfer from your hotel in Bali for flight to Yogyakarta. Upon arrival in Yogyakarta proceed to the famous and mysterious Borobudur Buddhist Temple, the single largest Buddhist structure on earth. Borobudur was built between 760 and 830, and took over 75 years to complete. The monument is 9 levels high and the compound consists of three monuments: the Borobudur Temple and two smaller temples situated to the east, Mendut and Pawon. The style incorporates influences from India, Hinduism and Buddhism. Borobudur is believed to have been abandoned sometime in the 14th Century and the temple lay hidden underneath thick jungle growth and volcanic ash for several hundred years. In the 19th Century Sir Thomas Raffles, the British statesman who was involved in the conquest of Java, spearheaded a movement to rediscover Borobudur after receiving knowledge of its existence and is credited for bringing it to the world’s attention, with the help of Dutch engineers. Unfortunately the temple had faced years of decay and destruction and was restored two times in the 19th Century. Borobudur today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and both a shrine and a pilgrimage site. It is a must-see for anyone visiting Indonesia. You will have time to explore Borobudur as well as the smaller temples of Mendut and Pawon, which are all located in a straight line from each other. There is a mutual religious relationship between the three temples, although the exact ritual process is unknown. Later, you will be dropped off at your hotel in Yogyakarta and the remainder of the day is at leisure.
