Chiang Rai Stopover

Duration
3 Days
Prices From:
US$ 227

Explore the northern region of Thailand on this city stopover in Chiang Rai. During you’re time in and around Chiang Rai, you’ll have the chance to tour temples such as the bizarre White Temple, head into the mountains to visit hill tribes, and bargain for artisan goods at the markets in Mae Sai, located in the famous Golden Triangle.

This 3-day Thailand vacation takes you in and around the northern city of Chiang Rai.

Your Thai vacation focuses on the city of Chiang Rai, located in the northern corner of the country near Chiang Mai. Although it’s smaller than Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai boasts similarly gorgeous architecture and a quiet, rural atmosphere compared to Bangkok. In fact, it is quiet even compared to Chiang Mai, meaning you’ll experience an authentic, working Thai city when you visit. The most popular spots in town are the temples, Wat Phra Singh and Wat Phra That Chedi Lunang, and the fascinating Night Bazaar, which transforms the downtown market into a bustling stretch of artisan stalls and food carts when the sun goes down. No trip to Chiang Rai is complete without checking out Wat Rong Khun or the White Temple, a bizarre, whitewashed temple designed by famous artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Its monochromatic palette and elaborate dragon scaling makes it one of the most unique buildings you’ll ever see, even if it won’t be completed for another 100 years.

While on Thailand tours in Chiang Rai, you’ll also head on a full-day tour of the surrounding countryside. You’ll head into the hills to visit the Akha and Yao Hill Tribes, who are ethnic minorities originating from China and Tibet. You’ll also head to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos all meet on the banks of the Mekong River. You’ll visit Chiang Saen, home to incredible medieval ruins, as well as Mae Sai, where Burmese merchants cross the border each day and transform the city into a bustling marketplace. Mae Sai is your best spot to find Burmese lacquerware, gems, jade, and generally work on your bargaining skills.

Consider adding on a visit to Chiang Mai or a Mekong River cruise to extend your Thailand vacation after visiting Chiang Rai.
