China and Pandas with Tibet Train

Duration
13 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,256

An unbeatable combination - after Imperial Beijing, travel on the Tibet Express through majestic scenery to Lhasa then fly to Chengdu and its Pandas and finally to electrifying Shanghai.

Starting in Beijing, visit to the world’s largest public square, Tian An Men Square, step back in time at the Imperial Palace also known as the Forbidden City. Later head to the Great Wall of China located 80 kilometres/50 miles north of the city, a site that will never cease to amaze.

Next fly to Xining where a tour of the city includes a museum featuring ancient ceramics, a 500 year old temple and a Buddhist lamasery.

From Xining, join the Tibet Express spending overnight on the train while climbing high above the lowlands of China eventually reaching Lhasa in Tibet.

Now it’s time to experience the unique highlights of this city. The first stop is the Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s holiest temple with its Buddha made of gold. Also visit the Sera Monastery, training centre for Buddhist monks and later it is time to discover atmospheric Bakhor Street in the centre of the city and the heart of Lhasa. There will be time here to shop for traditional Tibetan artifacts.

The next day is a visit to the imposing Potala Palace, former home to the Dalai Lamas and the centre of all religious and political activity. To give an idea of its size and grandeur, it has 1000 rooms and is 13 stories tall. Then it’s on to the Drepung Monastery, an old but active lamasery and Norbulinka Park, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lamas, a huge building with 370 rooms located in the middle of a hundred acre garden.

A unique but interesting visit is to a Tibetan Hospital and to a Tibetan community. During a stay in Lhasa, it is well worth keeping an eye out for locals dressed in traditional colourful costumes.

Leaving Tibet, fly to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province where a highlight will be the Panda Sanctuary to see pandas up close. Other visits are to the SanxingduiMuseum and a local teahouse.

From here, fly to spectacular Shanghai with its mixture of the traditional with the contemporary. Sightseeing includes the legendary Bund, the extensive Yu Yuan ornamental gardens and the excellent Shanghai Museum with its many important treasures.
