As a first taste of the Middle Kingdom, or a recap that takes in some of the lesser known highlights, this China tour takes you from Shanghai to Beijing via the beautiful city of Hangzhou, and the Great Wall.

This 8-day trip from Shanghai to Beijing is the perfect introduction to China, devoting time to one of its most beautiful cities, Hangzhou, before going on to explore the icons of Beijing.

‘Old meets new’ is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot, but in Shanghai, it’s a living philosophy. Speed through the suburbs on the Maglev train from the airport to China’s space age city. Perhaps devote your evening to a stroll along the Bund to see the spectacular Pudong skyline at its finest. Your first full day is then devoted to old Shanghai, including the 16th century Yu Garden, along with traditional Chinese pharmacies, tea houses, and more. You’ll also visit the Jade Buddha Temple, before boarding your high speed train to Hangzhou.

Marco Polo called Hangzhou the most beautiful city he’d ever seen – and he was from Venice! Take a boat ride out on the West Lake, and soak up the same inspiration that has fuelled poets and painters – not to mention Korean and Japanese garden designers – for centuries. You’ll also visit sights such as the Six Harmony Pagoda and Lingyin Temple before roaming Hangzhou’s tea-growing valley and learning about its famous Longjing tea. Your second day here is spent at leisure. If you prefer, use it to take a trip to Wuzhen, a photogenic water town filled with ancient stone bridges, with a centuries-old arts and crafts tradition.

Ready for more high speed rail excitement? Cover the 1500 kilometres to Beijing in less than six hours. Take a night to settle in, then start your day’s exploration at Tian’anmen Square, surely one of the most impressive sights in China, overlooked by your next stop, the Forbidden City. Your afternoon is yours to enjoy. Perhaps visit the beautiful Summer Palace, or seek your own slice of serenity at the Temple of Heaven Park. Of course, no trip to China is complete without visiting the Great Wall, which remains spectacular even on return viewings. On this trip, you’ll visit the Badaling section of the Wall, one of the best preserved and most popular sections, with good reason.

Return to Beijing for departure the following day.
