China Odyssey incl. Airfare

Duration
12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,983

Head on an unforgettable odyssey to the Middle Kingdom to explore Beijing and the glittering metropolis of Shanghai. On this China vacation, you’ll explore icons like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, visit the Army of Terracotta Warriors, and experience the fast-moving and innovative present of the country’s major cities.

This 12-day China vacation takes you from the Chinese capital, Beijing, to the southern metropolis of Shanghai.

Your China vacation begins in Beijing, the Chinese capital and the centre of culture for the country. In the past, Beijing was home to the imperial court and the riches of the empire. Today, it’s a modern economic powerhouse with a rapidly-growing population and a whole host of stunning contemporary architecture, from the CCTV Building to Ai Weiwei’s Olympic Stadium. A city tour will showcase many of the sights such as Tian’anmen Square, the largest public plaza in the world, the Forbidden City with its imperial treasure troves, and the Temple of Heaven, where you can practice Tai Chi and explore the nation’s deep spiritual roots. In the evening, connect with locals by heading to one of 60,000 restaurants and feasting on Peking Duck, dumplings, and other northern specialties.

From Beijing, take a day trip to the Great Wall, the massive series of stone walls along China’s northern border and one of the world’s ancient triumphs of engineering. Pass along the Badaling section of the Great Wall to explore an old military outpost and enjoy stunning views of the northern countryside. After returning to Beijing, connect on to Xian to continue your China vacation.

Xian used to be an imperial city at the end of the Silk Road. Today, it’s known as the home of the Army of Terracotta Warriors that protect the ancient tomb of the country’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Spend your time in the city exploring the tomb complex and seeing the Terracotta Warriors before heading into the city’s renowned Muslim Quarter for a visit to the Grand Mosque. From Xian, head into Guilin to explore a landscape of rice paddies, limestone mountains, and rivers that was immortalized in classical Chinese painting. Take a cruise along the Li River to gain a full appreciation of the countryside’s beauty.

From Guilin, head to Shanghai, the mystical city of the new century. While the city retains traces of its early 20th-century self, when it was ground zero for the West’s presence in China, Shanghai is best known as one of the world’s largest metropolises and a glittering example of 21st-century innovation. Take a city tour to visit the old sites like Yu Yuan Garden before heading to Nanjing Road to indulge in the locals’ love of shopping. In the evening, take in a Chinese acrobat performance before strolling the downtown to admire the city’s famous skyline. While in Shanghai, you’ll also take a day trip to nearby Suzhou, the garden city that was a haven for artists, writers, and poets. Tour the Humble Administrator’s Ornamental Gardens to appreciate the beauty of the city before returning to Shanghai.

This China vacation offers a taste of both the country’s decadent past and fast-moving present.
