Langkawi at Leisure
Langkawi Island is an archipelago, comprising of 99 islands (with an extra 5 islands being revealed during low tide), situated in the Andaman Sea. Located in the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border, Langkawi Island is located 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia, separated by the Straits of Malacca.
A total land mass of 47,848 hectares, the main island of Langkawi (or Pulau Langkawi) itself measures 32,000 hectares, spanning 25 kms north to south and a few more kms east to west. While two thirds of the island is dominated by forest-covered mountains, hills, and natural vegetation, its coastal areas consist of flat, alluvial plains, accented by limestone ridges.
