Classic Cambodia including Air

Duration
11 Days

Explore ancient temples and modern capitals on this classic Cambodian tour. On this Southeast Asian vacation, you’ll tour the capital of Phnom Penh, relax at the beach in Kep, and explore the ancient temple complex of Angkor, including Angkor Wat, one of the world’s great monuments.

This 11-day Cambodia vacation takes you to Siem Reap, the temples of Angkor, Phnom Penh, and Kep. International airfare is included.

This Cambodia tour begins in Siem Reap, the gateway to the temples of Angkor. Luckily, Siem Reap isn’t like many gateway cities: sterile and boring. In fact, Siem Reap is now the cool kid on the block. In addition to offering access to the incredible temples of Angkor, it’s a trendy city with a great tourism infrastructure. From the backpacker hostels to the swank hotels attracting wealthier Globetrotters, Siem Reap is well-equipped to meet your needs in terms of food, drink, shopping, and nightlife and offers plenty of distractions for when you’re not exploring the temples.

Of course, Siem Reap is also primarily concerned with facilitating Angkor Wat tours. First stop in this massive temple city is Angkor Thom, the Buddhist masterpiece from the 12th century and the last capital of the ancient Khmer Kingdom. Tour its Elephant Terrace and take in its stone edifices with carvings of gods and ancient kings before moving north to explore Ta Phrom, the “hidden temple” of the jungle. When the French rediscovered the temples of Angkor, they left Ta Prohm mostly unearthed, meaning it’s a stone temple overgrown with roots, banyan trees, and collapsed stone walls. As such, you’ll feel like Indiana Jones as you explore its many antechambers and terraces.

The crowning achievement of the temples of Angkor is Angkor Wat, the 12th century Hindu temple that attracts more than a million tourists each year. It is also one of the largest temples in the world and indisputably Cambodia’s crown jewel (it even graces their flag). With its large courtyards, detailed bas-reliefs, and lotus bud-style roofs, the temple is the peak achievement of Khmer architecture. Take your time exploring its many rooms and terraces; you’re walking through one of the world’s great monuments. The following day, you’ll visit Banteay Srei, a red sandstone city known as the “Citadel of Women,” as well as the 12th century city Banteay Samre, and Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and the base of the Cambodian fishing industry.

This Cambodia tour continues from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, the country’s capital city of 1.5 million. Phnom Penh is exotic and the image of quintessential Southeast Asia, with its golden spires, temples, and riverside lanes. It’s also a bustling city that has suffered a lot in the past century, either from war or oppression under the Khmer Rouge. The tempo of life here can be a little overwhelming, but there are many treasures to discover within its limits. A city tour will reveal many of these treasures and introduce you to the ups and downs of its history. At the Royal Palace you’ll see the Silver Pagoda, with its 5,000 silver tiles, as well as the solid gold Buddha decorated with almost 10,000 diamonds. Then to the National Museum to learn about 19th-century art and culture before taking a sobering tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Field of Cheung Ek to learn about the Cambodian genocide and reflect on the great losses this nation endured under Communism.

After all the history of Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh, you’ll close out your Cambodia tour with a visit to Kep or Krong Kaeb, a relaxed resort town on the coast. The French founded Kep in 1908 as a seaside getaway and in the height of the country in the 1960s, the resort became popular among rich Cambodians headed on holiday. Staying at Mealea Resort, a boutique hotel near Horse Beach, you’ll have the opportunity to close out your Cambodia vacation in style as you take advantage of the beach and the surrounding jungle. Explore Kep National Park or simply sit back on the beach and enjoy the spectacular sunsets over the sea.

This 12th century masterpiece lies at the very centre of Angkor Thom and is an archaeological wonder of symmetry and grandeur. Continue to visit Thommanon, Ta Keo and Ta Prohm. Ta Prohm, the temple that has been left largely in it's natural state since its 're-discovery' by French explorers. Surrounded by jungle, its labyrinth of stone hallways is overgrown with the roots and limbs of massive banyan trees. This afternoon, you will visit to Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world, with a volume of stone equalling that of the Cheops pyramid in Egypt. It is unlike all the other Khmer temples in that it faces west, and is inspired by 12th Century Hinduism.

Day 5

Full Day Banteay Srei, Banteay Samre and Tonle Sap

This morning, you drive to Banteay Srei; the citadel of women - a tiny, enchanting temple, which is one of the jewels in this remarkable city. Built of red sandstone in the tenth century and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, the carved male and female figures in the niches are exquisitely executed in both style and proportion. This is the most Indian of all the temples in Angkor and in the words of H.W. Ponder, is a fairy palace in the heart of an immense and mysterious forest. Continue to Banteay Samre, is built under Suryavarman II and Yasovarman II in the early 12th century, it is a Hindu temple in the Angkor Wat style. Named after the Samré, an ancient people of Indochina, the temple uses the same materials as the Banteay Srei. This afternoon, drive to a development project teaching young adults, stone carving, wood carving and lacquer application, Les Artisans d' Angkor is a heart warming reminder that progress in Cambodia can go hand in hand with traditional crafts. Then continue to Ton Le Sap Lake, the largest fresh water lake in South East Asia, is the lifeblood of the Cambodian fishing industry. The Mekong River, from as a far away as Phnom Penh, reverses the direction of the Ton Le Sap river to bring an overflow of water and silt to support both rice growing and the breeding fish of many sizes and varieties. Hopping on board small shaded vessels and moving between the floating homes and small fish farms you will experience close up, daily lake life.

During the Khmer Rouge years, thousands of Cambodians were tortured and imprisoned in Toul Sleng. They were then moved to the extermination camps at Choeng Ek where they were bludgeoned to death.
