Day 2

Colombo

Today you will explore Colombo, capital and major port of Sri Lanka! A fascinating city that links the past with the present, its tangible history is a unique mix of relics of Portuguese, Dutch and English settlement, blended with Indian influences. Drive past the commercial district of the city, and through the Pettah bazaar area. Crowded narrow streets teeming with people, is the perfect introduction to Pettah Bazaar. Tiny little shops with goods piled high, street stalls filled chaotically and vending carts complete the picture.

In Sri Lanka Hindu Temples are known as kovils. Visit the oldest and largest kovil in Colombo - Sri Kailawasanathar Swami Devasthanam. Stop at the active Gangarama Temple, which is the nicest and most intimate of all Colombo's Buddhist temples.

Enjoy a glimpse of the Jami-Ul-Akbar Mosque, a red and white shrine that resembles a raspberry layer cake with candy minarets. Your tour takes you through the Wolvenhal Dutch Church and Hultsforf Law Courts to the residential area of Cinnamon Gardens and on to the Independence Square and the Convention Center (BMICH) and the National Museum.

Delve deeper into this culture at the elegant, white, colonnaded National Museum. View the fascinating and sometimes scary mask collection!, Other exhibits include Hindu and Buddhist bronzes and a collection of the regalia of the King of Kandy.

The Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) built between 1970 - 1973, is a convention centre and a gift from the People's Republic of China in memory of Solomon Ridgeway Dias Bandarnaike, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) from 1956 to 1959.
