Duration

Discover the charms of Hong Kong and northern Thailand on this Southeast Asian getaway. Explore the famous temples of Chiang Mai before feeding elephants in the nearby rainforest and zipping to Hong Kong to shop and dine to your heart’s content amidst the city’s towering skyscrapers.

This 9-day tour takes you to Thailand’s northern capital of Chiang Mai and Hong Kong. This itinerary includes international airfare.

Globetrotters wanting to see a side of Thailand different from the bustle of Bangkok on a Thailand vacation will get their money’s worth in Chiang Mai. As the country’s unofficial northern capital, Chiang Mai is quiet and relatively temperate compared to Bangkok. In fact, the city’s sleepy residential atmosphere disguises much of its vibrancy. Chiang Mai might be a fraction of the size of Bangkok, but in terms of food and culture, it’s no second fiddle. It took over from Chiang Rai as capital of the Lanna Kingdom during the Middle Ages and still boasts many remnants of its royal past. Tour the old city centre to visit dozens of temples, such as Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, home to a relic of the Buddha, before feasting on incredible northern Thai cuisine, such as khao soi.

Much of Chiang Mai’s appeal is its access to the incredible landscape of northern Thailand. Leave the city in any direction and you’ll find yourself in lush foothills. At the Elephant Nature Park, you can witness the rescue and rehabilitation of threatened wild elephants. Learn about their needs and rescue stories before feeding the elephants for yourself. Then head up the peak of Doi Chang Dao to zip line throughout the dense rainforest canopy and stop off at the cascading Mae Kampong Waterfall.

After taking in Chiang Mai’s charming northern climate and culture, fly northeast to Hong Kong, one of the world’s great cities. Often dubbed the “City of Life” as it never seems to sleep, Hong Kong is famous the world over for its towering skyscrapers, world-class food and shopping, and endless bustle of activity. The British controlled the city until 1997, making the city a meeting ground between the East and West. Whether you’re looking to go on a shopping binge, marvel at towering architecture, or gorge yourself on the best in world cuisine, Hong Kong has you covered. The city is famous for its shopping, with the lack of sales tax enticing shoppers the world over. Head to one of the city’s many malls, the endless bespoke tailors, or the lively Temple Street Night Market to shop to your heart’s content. But even more than shopping and fashion, Hong Kong is all about food.

The Cantonese people are ravenous for good food. Whether you want Cantonese or Sichuan, Japanese or French, Portuguese or Indian, you’ll find it in Hong Kong. Spend nights here feasting on hot pot dinners and drinking pints of San Miguel, the most popular local beer. When you’re not eating or shopping—you could spend your entire stay in Hong Kong in stores and restaurants and not be disappointed—you can marvel at the city’s many sights. Getting around Hong Kong is a breeze. The locals speak English, a holdover from British rule, and the public transit is one of the world’s most efficient. Stroll through the streets to gaze up at the over 1,300 skyscrapers of the city’s skyline, and then ride the tram up to Victoria Peak, the highest point in the city, for a better vantage point. End your travels by riding the Star Ferry across the harbour connecting mainland Kowloon to Hong Kong Island, taking in one last magnificent view of the city from the water. This Thailand and Hong Kong vacation is an ideal way to experience two of the great Asian cultures.

Day 3

Chiang Mai Temples and Doi Suthep

Today, set out on a private half-day guided tour to visit some of the most sacred temples in Northern Thailand, beginning with Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, which contains a holy relic of the Lord Buddha. Tucked away just outside of Chiang Mai city, the temple is accessed via 300 stairs and offers a beautiful view of the city and surrounding countryside. Afterwards, drive back down to the city centre and visit the 14th-century temple Wat Suan Dok, which contains the ashes of Chiang Mai's former Royal family and is currently home to a famous school for monks. Also visit Wat Jedyod, known as The Temple of Seven Spires. (Note: please dress modestly. No sleeveless t-shirts or short shorts are allowed when visiting the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep.)

Elephant Nature Park

This morning you will be picked up from your hotel and taken on a picturesque drive through the Thai countryside along the Mae Taeng Valley. Arrive at Elephant Nature Park, a rescue and rehabilitation centre for Thai elephants. You’ll hear the elephants’ own rescue stories as told by expert guides. After fruit has been unloaded and distributed, feed the elephants these treats from a viewing platform. Break for lunch (included), then proceed to a nearby river to learn how to safely and properly bathe an elephant. Plunge right in and help scrub these giants as they splash around! You also have the option of watching the elephants bathe and play while you stay dry on the sandy shore. Park visits are all about spending quality time observing and being with the herd, and therefore the program does not follow a strict schedule. The best way to make the most of your visit is to relax, watch and learn from the elephants. Around 5:00pm, transfer back to your hotel in Chiang Mai.

Day 5

Chiang Mai Rainforest

Early this morning, transfer from Chiang Mai to Thailand's third-highest peak for an exhilarating ride on zip lines through the ancient rainforest canopy. There are 18 platforms, sky bridges and lowering stations which connect 2 kilometres of zip lines. You’ll zip easily from tree to tree on a spectacular course that goes gradually downhill. A safety team will accompany you and teach you how to move with the speed and grace of a young gibbon. After spending three hours in the forest canopy, take a break by the riverside for a set lunch of Northern Thai cuisine, then trek to the picturesque village of Mae Kompong and its famous waterfall. Transfer back to Chiang Mai, arriving your hotel around 4:00pm.
