Essential Philippines with Mactan Island

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,626

Visit the capital, Manila, the waterfalls of Pangsanjan, the beautiful beaches of Borocay, Cebu, the Philippine’s oldest city and Bohol’s beaches, exotic countryside and gushing waterfalls.

The Philippines is made up of over 7000 islands in the form of an archipelago. This may sound daunting but of course only a certain number of islands will be of interest to the visitor. One of the attractions is that most locals speak excellent English due mainly to the fact that the country was an American colony for a long period. However, there is a mixture of Spanish influences (another colonizer) which mingle with the American.

Natural beauty is reflected in the topography which includes majestic volcanic mountains, scenic rice paddies, tumbling waterfalls, serene lakes and some of the best beaches anywhere. Add to this smiling, friendly and welcoming people and this is the essence of the Philippines.

The Philippines’ capital, Manila, is a decidedly busy, teeming metropolis but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have much to offer the visitor. There is much history attached to the city and as for shopping and dining, there are excellent centrally located modern malls and good restaurants are everywhere. One advantage in Manila is that English is widely spoken. During your stay here, sightseeing will revolve mainly around the historic quarter called Intramuros in the core of the city, originally the seat of the Spanish Colonial government. It is surrounded by a high wall and Spanish Colonial influences are very apparent in the architecture and infrastructure.  Start with a visit to Rizal Park located adjacent to Intramuros. This park named after Dr. Jose Rizal, a Philippine national hero, is very popular with the local community and is their “city” park. Inside Intramuros, which then becomes a walking tour, visit FortSantiago, a citadel built by the Spanish in the 16th Century. Exiting Intramuros, head to Casa Manila, a reproduction of a Spanish Colonial house reflecting the lifestyle of the gentry of that time. The house contains some excellent antique furniture. Then visit the Chinese cemetery where the mausoleums are as big and elaborate as houses. Finish up with a tour of the financial and commercial districts of Manila.

From Manila, take a two hour overland journey to the town of Pagsanjan and its wonderful waterfalls. Here you will board a dugout canoe and travel through jagged boulders and rocks. This is followed by a bamboo raft ride under the falls. Return later to Manila.

Fly next to Boracay, a small island located 315 kilometres/195 miles south of Manila and reached by air followed by a boat ride. It is only 7 kilometres/4 miles in length and the main beach is 4 kilometres/2.5 miles long.  The island has received many accolades and awards from numerous sources and, in fact, was voted World’s best island by Travel and Leisure magazine. This world class resort has beautiful white sand beaches and offers many amenities in the way of restaurants, bars, pubs and nightclubs.  For watersports enthusiasts, there are excellent facilities for windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkeling plus there is a first class 18 hole golf course. There is no set programme included as it is your choice as to what you would like to do here.

The next stop is Cebu reached by a short flight. Cebu Island is 225 kilometres/140 miles in length north to south. It is made up of rolling hills and rugged mountain ranges. Cebu City is the second largest city in the Philippines and is a centre for commerce and industry. It is also the oldest city in the Philippines with much history.

During your stay, you will start with a city tour which takes in Magellan’s Cross housed in a chapel and planted there by Portuguese and Spanish explorers, the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino founded in the 16th Century and the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the country, Fort San Pedro built in 1738, a Spanish outpost where two sides face the sea and the Taoist Temple giving a unique look at the Chinese heritage in the Philippines.

The next day takes you to the neighbouring island of Bohol reached by ferry directly east of Cebu. Bohol has a mountainous interior which is home to rare flora and fauna including the Tarsiers, one of the world’s smallest primates. You will have a countryside tour which will include Hinagdanan Cave with its strange underworld of limestone formations. Continue to Baclayon. En route, stop at the historic Blood Compact site where a Spanish conquistador and a native chieftain sealed their friendship. In Baclayon, visit the centuries old stone church which houses a museum containing religious art and music inscribed on animal skins. Next is a highlight in Bohol, the Chocolate Hills so-called because although covered in green grass, at dry times of the year they turn brown. There are between 1250 and 1750 of these strange looking hills covering a wide area. Finally, take a cruise on the Loboc River and have lunch on board. Return to Cebu in the late afternoon.
