Fall Colours of Japan: Independent Group Tour

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,749

Japan’s fall foliage is a restrained beauty that grows on you the more you look at it. Travel to Tokyo, Mt. Fuji and Kyoto on an independent group tour designed to introduce you to Japan’s most scenic areas, historic sights and cultural treasures. Special seasonal experiences include a train ride through Momiji Tunnel and a night-time visit to Kibune Shrine.

Japan Independent Group Tours
Goway’s independent group tours of Japan include day tours with local expert guides, with group sizes that will vary each day (from 2-40 travellers). Some day tours will require you to meet your group at a designated meeting point. Japan has one of the best public transit systems in the world, and taxis are fairly priced with no tipping expected.

This 8-day trip through Japan focuses on the dazzling autumn colours of early November.

Start in Tokyo, where you’ll spend four nights exploring Japan’s mind-boggling capital. A full day tour gives you a sense of this immense megacity, from the top of Tokyo Tower to a Japanese tea ceremony, to the Imperial Palace Plaza and a cruise along the Sumida River. You’ll also stop in at Senso-ji, the city’s oldest and most famous temple, before gawking at Ginza, Tokyo’s powerhouse shopping district. Enjoy the evening on your own, but be sure to meet your coach on time the following morning for your trip to Mount Fuji. Taking the ropeway ride up Mount Kachi Kachi, you’ll enjoy a great view of the autumn leaves, Lake Kawaguchi, and hopefully, famously shy Fuji itself. This day in the countryside gives you some valuable time away from Tokyo’s mad pace, but you’ll be back by early evening ready to enjoy another night in the capital. Your bus drops you right in the heart of Shinjuku. Neon Tokyo at its best, this neighbourhood is busy at all hours as office workers take over bars and restaurants beneath the city’s glow. Take a full day at leisure to explore on your own. You may wish to visit Meiji-Jingu shrine on the edge of the popular Harajuku district or take in an act at Kabuki-Za. Your options are endless in this ever-moving, ever-changing city.

The Nozomi bullet train speeds you on to Kyoto, famous for its hundreds of beautiful temples. Tourists flock to the city during cherry blossom season, yet many of those in the know prefer the fall foliage as a backdrop to their photos. See a traditional arts show performed by apprentice geishas, and enjoy an evening tea ceremony to help you settle in. Kyoto may surprise you with the wide spread of its temples, but don’t worry. A day tour takes you to several of the highlights in comfort. Tour Nijo Castle (replaced by Ryoan-ji Temple when the castle is closed), and Kinkaku-ji, home to the famous Golden Pavilion. You’ll then go on to the Imperial Palace, with exclusive access to the former residence of the Emperor of Japan. Your afternoon is free to explore on your own. You may want to visit some of the favourite temples and shrines around Kyoto, such as the Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its seemingly endless tunnel of red torii gates, or Kiyomizu-dera, which offers a spectacular view over Kyoto. Alternatively, head west to the evocative Bamboo Grove in Sagano, or hike through Iwatayama Monkey Park, saying hello to cheeky macaques, and taking in a breathtaking Kyoto view. In the evening, you’ll be met once more for a visit to the Momjii Tunnel, an archway of illuminated maple trees, before a traditional Japanese inn dinner. Like Tokyo, Kyoto has lots to see, so spend a full day exploring on your own, or consider a day trip to nearby Nara if you’d like a broader insight into Japan’s history and beauty.
