Travel by train to the former French “hill station” and resort located in the mountains of Northern Vietnam where scenic vistas and colourful hilltribes complete the picture.


Sapa is a very special place situated in the north west of Vietnam close to the Chinese border.  It combines rugged scenery with cultural diversity. At 1650 metres/5350 feet, it is a very picturesque market town. Its attractions are the many ethnic hill tribes who live around the area, its lush vegetation, its interesting rice terraces and a small number of French Colonial buildings.

Departing from Hanoi on the Fanxipan Express train, travel overnight in comfort in a sleeping compartment. On arrival the next morning, transfer to the hotel where you will stay overnight before returning to Hanoi on the return overnight train journey.

During your stay in Sapa, you will have time to check out the excellent markets to purchase some souvenirs and also go on a hike to visit some of the hill tribe villages.

Day 1

Evening departure from Hanoi

This evening you will be picked up from your hotel in Hanoi and transferred to the railway station for your overnight train to Lao Cai. Departure is scheduled for 9:15pm (subject to change).

Day 2

Lao Cai to Sapa

Upon arrival at Lao Cai station early this morning, you will be met by your local guide and transfer by private vehicle to Sapa for breakfast at the hotel. (Please note that standard check-in time at the hotel is 2:00pm, so leave your luggage with the concierge until your room is ready.) After breakfast, the morning is free for you to explore Sapa's colourful market and town. This afternoon, have lunch at a local restaurant, then head out of town towards Cat Cat village to begin a trek through the countryside. Stop at a waterfall for a short rest before following the trail through a series of rice terraces. Continue through the lush rain forest of Hoang Lien National Park and arrive in Y Linh Ho village, home of the Black Hmong ethnic minority. Take some time to explore and rest a little, then climb back towards the main road and transfer by vehicle back to Sapa. The evening is at leisure.

Day 3

Sapa to Lo Cai

Today is devoted to a hike through the breathtaking scenery of the Sapa valley. As soon as you leave the town you will be met with awe-inspiring views of the morning mist blanketing the rice terraces. Follow a small trail and cross the Muong Hoa River to reach the Hmong village of Lao Chai. Continue on to the village of Ta Van, then hike along the river and cross a suspension bridge to reach a collection of ancient rock carvings. After lunch in the village, walk through a bamboo forest to reach Giang Ta Chai, a Red Dao village. Pause to rest at a nearby waterfall, then climb to the main road and transfer by vehicle to Lao Cai station for the evening train back to Hanoi.

Arrive Hanoi rail station early this morning and transfer to your hotel.
