Bandung

Driving via the old Dutch resort town of Lembang which lies at the foot of the volcano in the midst of a lush market garden area famous for its fruits, vegetables, flowers and dairy products. From Lembang, the road skirts the eastern flanks of the volcano, passing through verdant tea plantations. After about 9km, you reach the Tangkuban Perahu Nature Reserve gate. There is a whole series of craters to walk around and even down into, where sulfurous steam gurgles out of muddy fissures in the earth.

From Tangkuban Perahu, it's about 30 minutes' drive to Ciater Hotsprings, a nice park with small pools to sit or swim. The streams and pools are fed by warm mineral springs, as a result of the heat from the nearby volcano.

In early afternoon drive back to Bandung. Coming closer to the city, drive around for sightseeing to see the city's landmarks. Pass by Gedung Sate, a public building that was designed according to a neoclassical design incorporating native Indonesian elements by Dutch architect J. Gerber. Its common name, Gedung sate, is a nickname that translates literally from Indonesian to "'satay building", which is a reference to the shape of the building's central pinnacle - which resemble the shape of one of the Indonesian traditional dish called satay.

Next, for an immediate introduction to the sounds of this provincial capital, try your hand at regional music by joining local children from a traditional "angklung orchestra" Mang Udjo. This unusual form of music creates sweet resonating melodies, by the gentle shaking of bamboo instruments. Be prepared to get involved, this is a fun and very hands-on workshop.

In the late afternoon, the cooler climate makes wandering the city streets a pleasure. Walk along Cihampelas street, familiarly known as 'Jean Street', here you can shop at the famous bargain fashion boutiques with their outlandish shop fronts.

Day 5

Wonosobo to Yogyakarta

Dieng Plateau is a marshy plateau that forms the floor of a caldera complex on the Dieng Volcanic complex near the city of Wonosobo in Central Java. Referred to as "Dieng", it sits at 2200 meters above sea level, far from major population centres. The name "Dieng" comes from "Di Hyang" which means "abode of the Gods".

Depart early morning and drive to Dieng plateu for a glorious morning through mountains. Here, the rugged landscape is too harsh for cultivation of rice and market gardens. By the roadsides in these enchanting highlands, villagers set up impromptu markets selling vegetables and hardy pulses. Finally the road reaches the awe-inspiring Dieng Plateau. This mystical location is the breathtaking setting for Java's oldest temples, Dieng Temples, a Hindu centre of worship since the 7th century and traditionally seen as the seat of Java's supernatural powers.

After the temples, also visit the Sikidang crater, one of craters in Dieng. It is the most easy to reach due to its location. Sikidang crater is formed from volcanic eruption in Dieng Plateau centuries ago. This is an active crater where you could see the volcanic activity in the form of volcanic mud that bursts with poisonous gas that pepper in the form of thick white smoke.

Also stop at two lakes that are located close to each other, only divided by plains running down between them. Telaga Warna is a beautiful lake with turquoise hues caused by the bubbling sulfur deposits around its shores. While Telaga Pengilon is a clear lake which is named after the Javanese word for "mirror" because of its calm and clear surface, resembling a mirror.

Return to hotel for late breakfast and check-out, then travel down to Magelang. In the afternoon you will explore and unravel the mysteries behind Borobudur Temple. The colossal Buddhist monument was built by hand from thousands of volcanic and river stone blocks during the 8th and 9th centuries. Some 432 serene faced Buddha images stare out over the surrounding rice fields and distant mountains.

Visit also the nearby exquisite Mendut Temple, even older than Borobudur. Here, you can see three magnificent and well preserved carved stone statues set inside the pyramid shaped temple. At Pawon Temple admire the relief panels and beautiful architecture of this small and solitary Javanese temple.
