Journey to Hong Kong and Taiwan

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,475

Explore the southern cultural hubs of Hong Kong and Taipei on this Taiwan vacation. As you tour these southern metropolises, you'll have the chance to learn about centuries of tradition and fascinating history, tour Buddhist temples and monuments, and engage with two distinct island cultures.

This 9-day Taiwan vacation takes you from Hong Kong to the island of Taiwan and Chinese Taipei.

Your Taiwan vacation begins in Hong Kong, the bustling metropolis full of skyscrapers and world-class food and shopping that's famous the world over for its hustle and bustle. For a century, Hong Kong acted as a bridge between East and West, combining Chinese and British cultures. Since 1997, it has returned to mainland control, but the city still bears its own unique identity. Whether you spend your time shopping in the famous shopping malls or feasting on the excellent international cuisine to be found within its borders, your time in Hong Kong will be well-spent. A half day Hong Kong Island tour will get you up to speed on the landmarks. Ride the tram up to Victoria Peak, the highest point in the city, to enjoy stunning panoramas of the 1,300 skyscrapers that crowd the skyline. Continue along to the Aberdeen Fishing Village, where fishermen continue age-old traditions, and the city's most popular beach, Repulse Bay Beach, before closing out your tour with a visit to Stanley Market, where you can shop for trinkets and stroll the seaside village bazaar.

From Hong Kong, continue your Taiwan vacation by connecting to Taipei, the capital of the island nation. Much like Hong Kong, Taipei blends a lot of different cultures, with traditional Chinese culture at the forefront, but also large influences from Japan, Southeast Asia, and America. You can spend your time in the city taking advantage of the many temples and museums, such as the National Palace Museum, which houses Chinese treasures dating back 5,000 years. But to get the city's pulse, you'll want to head out to eat at its bustling restaurants, tasting midnight snacks, trying the famous stinky tofu, or indulging the city's quirky side with a visit to the many themed restaurants that attract locals and travellers alike.

From Taipei, you'll head southwest to explore the smaller centres on the island of Taiwan. You'll pass Sun Moon Lake, the only natural lake of notable size on the island, and have a chance to visit the famous Wenwu Temple or Literature Warrior Temple, which is dedicated to both Confucius as the Master of Pen and Kuan Ti as the Master of Sword. Continue along to Kaohsiung City, the second largest city in Taiwan, stopping off at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Monastery along the way, where you can learn about Buddhism from monks and enjoy a Buddhist vegetarian lunch.

In Kenting, you'll get a taste for Taiwan's stunning landscape, as the national park combines mountains, forests, lakes, sand dunes, beaches, and coral reefs. As you pass Hualien and travel along the east coast, you'll explore 170 kilometres of unspoiled land, which showcases wind and water-eroded landforms along the coast. Close out your Taiwan vacation by visiting Taroko Gorge, with its sheer marble cliffs and deep gorges that date back 230 million years. Connect back to Taipei for one last visit to the capital before ending your trip.
