Kyushu Holiday: Fukuoka to Fukuoka

Duration
4 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,394

Explore the fascinating island of Kyushu in southern Japan. Tour the vibrant coastal city of Fukuoka and its seventeenth century castle before heading east to the hot springs of Beppu and then southwest to visit the sobering memorials of Nagasaki.

This 4-day tour takes you to the southern island of Kyushu, exploring its major cities and volcanic idylls.

Venture off the beaten path on a Japanese vacation to this southern island. Fukuoka is the largest city on the island of Kyushu and has recently passed the populations of Kyoto and Kobe to become Japan’s fifth largest city. Serving as the entry point to Japan for Chinese and Korean tourists, Fukuoka is friendly and vibrant, with a distinct culinary cuisine absolutely worth checking out. Explore the ruins and reconstructions of seventeenth century Fukuoka Castle, take in a baseball game of the famous Softbank Hawks, and learn about the island’s history and culture at the Kyushu National Museum. Be sure to try some Hakata ramen while you’re there as it’s increasingly becoming one of the best-loved ramen styles in the country.

From Fukuoka, head to Beppu to discover a resort hill town boasting incredible natural hot springs. Visit the Hells of Beppu, natural thermal pools in the region, before relaxing in a traditional Japanese onsen and enjoying the warm waters for yourself. In Aso, pass by one of the largest volcanic craters in the world. While the volcano itself is currently off limits due to a recent eruption, Aso and its surrounding area boasts gorgeous landscape and some of the quaintest villages you’ll find on Kyushu.

In western Kyushu, you can visit Japan’s first national park, Unzen-Amakusa National Park. Stroll through mystical forest paths and enjoy the many rustic onsen in the village of Unzen. The village might be one of the only places you don’t see a convenience store on Japan tours. From Unzen, head even further west to visit Nagasaki, paying respects to the victims of the second atomic bomb blast at the end of World War II. Visit the Peace Memorial and Atomic Bomb Museum to get a full sense of the bomb’s devastation and the city’s remarkable rebirth.

If you’re heading to Japan for a second time or want to avoid the usual spots, this Japanese vacation is meant for you.
