Lhasa City Stay

Duration
4 Days
Prices From:
US$ 904

The centre of Tibetan Buddhism and former home of the Dalai Lamas, Lhasa offers an insight into Buddhist culture exemplified by the magnificent Potala Palace and many traditional temples.

Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world and contains many cultural significant Tibetan Buddhist sites. The name means "Land of the Gods" and is over 1300 years old,

Start your stay with a visit to the Potala Palace, the former home of the Dalai Lamas which sits perched on top of a hill and is an incredibly imposing and majestic building. It contains over 1000 rooms and is 13 stories high. The palace houses large amounts of rare cultural relics including many priceless hand written Buddhist scriptures and antiques.

Next you will visit the Deprung Monastery founded in 1416 and was the largest and wealthiest monastery in Tibet. At its height, the monastery had over 10,000 monks and governed 700 subsidiary monasteries. Afterwards time is spent at the Jokhang Temple constructed in the 7th Century, a splendid edifice under a gilded rooftop in the heart of Lhasa.

The following day, visit Norbulingka Palace, situated 1 kilometre away from the Potala Palace and built in 1755. It was the summer home of the Dalai Lamas. The current complex contains a small zoo and a botanical garden.  Next is the Sera Temple founded in 1419. It was famous for its Buddhist teachings and although smaller than Deprung Monastery, it still housed 7000 monks at its height. The final stop is at Barkhor Street Market in the old section of Lhasa where you can enjoy observing and bargaining with the local Tibetan vendors for unusual handicrafts.

Day 2

Full Day Potala Palace Jokhang Monastery and Bakhor Street with Lunch

This morning, you will first visit the amazing Potala Palace, built in the 17th Century and was, at one time, the seat of Tibetan religious and political activity, as well as the former home to the Dalai Lamas. The construction of the palace was started by King Songtsen Gumpa for his two newly wed wives. The palace was used by the king as a retreat for meditation until his death. The original structure was burned down and rebuilt in the 17th century by the Fifth Dalai Lama. It is now a museum 13 stories high and consisting of 1000 rooms. The Potala Palace has also become the most visited monument in Tibet. Also, visit Jokhang Temple, one of Tibet's holiest temples, home to the Golden Buddha, which is made of pure gold and encrusted with jewels. The huge Jokhang complex was built in 7th century and covers an area of about six acres, it is the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Tibetan pilgrims. This afternoon you have time to stroll around Bakhor Street, a circular street at the centre of Old Lhasa. It is a place where Tibetan culture, economy, religion and arts come together and is also a famous shopping market, where you will shop for traditional Tibetan artefacts in small roadside shops, made locally including Buddha figures, prayer flags, copper teapots, horse bells and jewellery inlaid with turquoise and other gems.

Day 3

Full Day Nobrulingkha Sera Temple and Drepung Monastery with Lunch

Today, enjoy a visit to Norbulinka Park, which was the summer residence of the Dalai Lama. It is a building with 370 rooms and is set amid a one hundred-acre garden.

Continue on to the Sera Monastery. Built in 1419, this monastery is a training centre for Buddhist monks. Later, you will visit Drepung Monastery, one of 10 active lamaseries in Tibet, dating back to 1416. Approximately 300 lamas still live and work here. As Tibet's largest and the most important temple of Gelugpa in Tibetan Buddhism, the Drepung Temple is especially known as the site of the annual Shoton Festival, with its dramatic unfurling of a giant Buddha tapestry on the hillside.
