Few cities open the senses like Delhi. India’s centre of politics and history, this bustling city also captures the country at its most frantic. Take it easy on your first day to adjust, then see the sights of new and old Delhi on a sightseeing tour. Visit the sprawling Red Fort, home to India’s Mughal emperors until 1857.You’ll also visit the India Gate, the Qutb Minar watchtower, and the tomb of Humayun.

Your next destination is Agra, home to India’s most familiar postcard image, the Taj Mahal. First, you’ll visit Agra Fort, built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. Then go on to the world’s most impressive mausoleum, the Taj Mahal. Erected for the third wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, it is India’s most popular attraction, luring visitors in the millions each year. You’ll also visit Fatehpur Sikri, the deserted city made of red sandstone.

For many, Jaipur is the quintessential Indian city. A full day of sightseeing takes you to the Palace of the Winds, where the intricate lattice work not only allowed the women of the palace to look down in secret on the streets below, but was designed specifically to catch the cooling breeze. Go on to the Amber Fort, a lavish 16th century Maharaja’s residence, housed within a deceptively simple, battle-ready exterior. Finally, visit the Jantar Mantar, a sundial and observatory showcasing the cutting edge of 18th century Indian technology.

From Jaipur, fly to Mumbai, the economic and cultural powerhouse of today’s India, andcentre of the world’s largest film industry – Bollywood! Your tour guide takes you to the Gateway of India, the University of Mumbai, and other eye-popping sights, many of which date back to the British colonial era. You’ll witness laundry madness at thedhabi ghats, then find somemuch needed tranquility at Mani Bhavan, MahatmaGhandi’s former residence. The following day, leave the frantic pace of Mumbai behind and visit Elephanta Island, home to the namesake caves. Return to Mumbai for an afternoon at leisure, before departing the following day.
