Highlights of Manila

FIRST-CLASS | PRIVATE-GUIDED: At first sight, Manila appears to be only a bustling metropolis. Once the older parts of the city are discovered, history and a culture influenced by the Spanish and US come to the fore.

The Philippines’ capital is a decidedly busy, teeming metropolis but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have much to offer the visitor. There is much history attached to the city and as for shopping and dining, there are excellent centrally located modern malls and good restaurants are everywhere. One advantage in Manila is that English is widely spoken.

During your stay here, sightseeing will revolve mainly around the historic quarter called Intramuros in the core of the city, originally the seat of the Spanish Colonial government. It is surrounded by a high wall and Spanish Colonial influences are very apparent in the architecture and infrastructure. Start with a visit to Rizal Park located adjacent to Intramuros. This park named after Dr. Jose Rizal, a Philippine national hero, is very popular with the local community and is their “city” park. Inside Intramuros, which then becomes a walking tour, visit Fort Santiago, a citadel built by the Spanish in the 16th Century. Afterwards, enter San Augustin Church, a Roman Catholic Church constructed during the Spanish Colonial period.

Exiting Intramuros, head to Casa Manila, a reproduction of a Spanish Colonial house reflecting the lifestyle of the gentry of that time. The house contains some excellent antique furniture. Finally visit Bahay Tsinoy, a museum which represents the Chinese community who settled in Manila.
