Mekong Cruise Getaway

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,379

On this air-inclusive cruise trip, uncover the Mekong Delta, the waterway that gives life to much of Cambodia and the southern regions of Vietnam. Explore villages most tourists never see, as well as the tent pole cities of Saigon and Phnom Penh.

This 10-day Southeast Asia trip including Mekong cruise includes flights from North America, then sets out from Saigon, Vietnam’s frenetic ‘big city.’ It then travels along the waterways of the Mekong, taking you to villages and temples beyond the gaze of most tourists before completing your trip in Siem Reap.

If you’ve got the energy after your flight, set out to explore the sights of Vietnam’s liveliest city, Saigon, more formally known as Ho Chi Minh City. Explore the former Presidential Palace, bargain up a storm in Ben Thanh Market, or contemplate human madness at the War Remnants Museum. In the evening, pull up a plastic stool at a local eatery and watch night-time Saigon pass by.

Board your vessel in the morning bound for the Cambodian border, and Kratie, a French colonial river port. Not far from here, keep an eye out for river dolphins in a protected national park. The following day is all about temples, including Wat Hanchey, and the Monkey Temple of Prek Kdam.

Arrive in Phnom Penh, the capital and economic centre of Cambodia. Visit the Royal Palace, with its awe-inspiring Silver Pagoda, and see arguably the best collection of Khmer artefacts outside Siem Reap at the National Museum. The afternoon is a little more somber, as you visit the Killing Fields and infamous Tuol Sleng, a former high school turned into a detention centre under the Pol Pot regime. This isn’t a light excursion, but it’s essential to understanding what Cambodia has been through and where the country is today.

Sailing along the Tonle River eventually brings you to Kampong Trolach, known for its silver making.
