Mount Kinabalu is Borneo’s highest peak, rising 4,095 metres into the air. Easily accessible to most fit climbers, no special mountaineering equipment is necessary to conquer the peak. It is however recommended to take your time acclimatizing to the ascent as you move through six distinctive zones of vegetation. 

The mountain is inhabited by over 300 species of birds and 100 different mammals. Lucky hikers may even spot an orangutan.

Itinerary

Day 1

Kota Kinabalu National Park

This morning you will be picked up at 08:00am from your city hotel for a 2 hour (approximately) journey to the Kinabalu National Park. The Park covers an area of 754 square kilometres and is 1623 metres above sea level. Within its boundaries, you will find lowland rain forest at its lower level, mountain vegetation at its medium level and conifers and other alpine flora at the summit. After the guided nature trail, you will have lunch.

After a video presentation of the Park, take a leisure guided mountain garden walk. In the late afternoon, you can either relax and enjoy the tropical scenery or explore the many nature trails before settling in for dinner.

Overnight at local lodge or Park accommodation.

Day 2

Summit of Mount Kinabalu

After breakfast and registering with the Park Officer to climb Mount Kinabalu, depart for the Power Station at 1829 meters and begin your trek on the summit trail. Be on the lookout for wild orchids, ferns, pitcher plants and rhododendrons. Arrive in the afternoon at Laban Rata at approximately 3,353 meters; rest here and recuperate for the morning climb the next day. The accommodation is basic (bunk beds and dormitory style) and simple with electricity and hot water. Overnight and dinner is at the guesthouse.

Day 3

Summit to Kota Kinabalu

In the early morning, commence your ascent for the final trek with torch light over bare rock face to the Summit. When you reach the 4095.20 metres milestone, give yourself a pat on the back. Congratulations! You are now on top of the roof of South East Asia, rest and enjoy the beautiful sunrise. Afterwards, you will descend to Laban Rata Guesthouse for breakfast. Continue your descent to the Power Station, arriving around noon and then transfer to Park Headquarters. Leave for Kota Kinabalu in the afternoon and then expect to arrive this evening in the city (between 16:00-17:00hrs).
