Northern Thailand is one of the world’s most alluring treks. Departing Chiang Mai, spend 4 days getting to know the unique and fascinating cultures of this region, including the hill tribes. This is the cultural heart of Thailand, where you’ll enjoy markets, traditional dance, and an authentic Thai cooking class. You’ll also have the chance to relieve those aching muscles with a Thai massage and steam bath.

Day 1

Chiang Mai To Lisu Lodge To Lahu Outpost

This morning you will be picked up from your hotel in Chiang Mai and taken to Lisu Lodge, arriving around 9AM. Enjoy a traditional welcome drink and then travel by a local open-air truck to the area near Pha Mieng to begin your trek. Start walking along the jungle trails to the remote village of Hmong Pha Mieng (about 1.5 hours of trekking). Here you can meet the inhabitants of this small hill tribe village in the jungle. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the forest. After lunch, walk to the top of the mountain (about 1.5 hours of trekking) where the Red Lahu Village of Pha Daeng is located. Continue walking along a mountain ridge to the Lahu village of Kup Kap (one hour trek) from where you have a spectacular view overlooking the Mae Taeng district and Chiang Mai town. Beyond the mountain peaks to the west lies Myanmar (Burma). Overnight at Lahu Outpost.

Day 2

Lahu Outpost To Lisu Lodge

After an early breakfast, go on a one and a half hour walk down a steep jungle path passing by the Huay Sadharn Waterfall. Transfer by local truck to the Rafting Station. Enjoy rafting down the river for about 45 minutes.

Return to Lisu Lodge by local truck. Stop off en-route to relax and enjoy a magnificent landscape at a Tea Plantation where you will be led by an experienced guide who will introduce you to the process of growing and harvesting tea as well as vegetation propagation to produce tea seedlings at the nursery, whilst teaching you how to pluck tea leaves and enjoy a cup of fresh-roasted tea. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch.

Upon arrival, a welcome drink will be served. Guided by a Lisu villager, walk from Ton Lung temple to visit the herbal garden. Then continue through the village with a stop for a cup of tea at the village shaman's house. Chat with the Lisu shaman and learn about his life, beliefs, curing rites and Lisu traditions.

Rice paddies - Walk with our guide through rice paddies where we work together with the villagers to grow rice without the use of pesticide and insecticide. Besides strolling through the green or the golden carpet of the paddy fields, depending on the season, you will learn and participate in the various stages of rice cultivation in northern Thai style.

Himmapaan nursery - Learn about the flora of northern Thailand and how we restore the forest ecosystem at a tree nursery of the Himmapaan Foundation whose goal is to support and implement environmental and social projects by working with local communities in areas affected by tourism.

Vegetable garden - Visit the vegetable garden where we produce organic fertilizer from leftover organic waste and grow a variety of vegetables and fruits that are used in several dishes served at Lisu Lodge. Time at leisure until Thai dinner with a traditional Lisu dance show.

Day 3

Lisu Lodge To Khum Lanna

After breakfast at the lodge, you have several activities to choose from for this morning. You can go on a guided biking tour around the Lisu Lodge area, take a Steam bath, have a massage, or go on an Ox-cart ride through farmlands to the Thai village of Baan Pang Mai Daeng. After have a Thai lunch at the lodge. This afternoon travel by local truck to Chiang Dao and onto an ethnic Karen village. Start with a 2-hour soft trek through the tropical forest to a traditional Lahu village. After a visit with the Lahu mountain people, transfer to Khum Lanna where you will overnight. Check-in to your room followed by a briefing and orientation to select your next day's activity. Around 4:30PM you will have an introduction to Thai cooking with a lesson on how to prepare four authentic Thai dishes. All major ingredients in Thai cooking are introduced along with the concept of balancing the 5-flavour groups. A Khum Lanna recipe book is included. Tonight, enjoy the Thai dinner that you have prepared! Overnight at Khum Lanna.

Day 4

Khum Lanna To Chiang Mai

Early this morning at 5:30AM, coffee and tea will be served in your room. Then head out by bicycle on a guided tour to experience the sunrise along the rural country road via San Kwang village. Arrive at Phrao where you can stop in at the morning local market. Here you can try the local coffee, or buy local cookies and flower garlands for the temple offering on the way back. There will be an opportunity to interact with the farmers and learn more about rice and their culture. Bike back to Khum Lanna with a stop at Wat Pa Gee. Pay respect to the Buddha image under the sacred tree. Continue biking to Khum Lanna along the canal, stopping to see the rice fields. Arrive back at the lodge this morning for a shower and a riverside breakfast served. In preparation for today's lunch, you will go on a garden tour around the compound, collecting different seasonal herbs, vegetables, and fruits for cooking. Take a break to learn how to ride a water buffalo! Then you will have another chance to learn how to prepare Thai food, followed by an informal Lanna country-style BBQ lunch, that you have prepared. In the afternoon, there are more activities to choose from: go on a guided biking tour around Khum Lanna, learn how to carve Fruit or Vegetables, or make candles, enjoy a personal herbal steam bath, or a hot-pressed herbal massage. Around 4:00PM you will transfer back to your hotel in Chiang Mai town by air-conditioned vehicle arriving in the early evening.

Please note: All accommodation is at locally run lodges. You will receive a private room and all rooms have a bed with comfortable bedding, warm blankets and towels. Note that the Lahu outpost has shared bathroom facilities, but the Lisu Lodge, and Khum Lanna Lodges both have ensuite bathrooms. All bathrooms have western toilets and hot showers.

Clients should be reasonably fit and able to handle 2.5 hours of trekking in one day.
