Takayama Holiday

Duration
3 Days

Take a holiday to the pastoral idylls of northwestern Honshu. Stroll through the charming town of Takayama in the foothills of the Japanese Alps before heading to coastal Kanazawa to visit its lush gardens and historical districts.

This 3-day tour highlights two of Honshu’s best cities, mountainous Takayama and coastal Kanazawa.

Your Japanese vacation begins in the mountain town of Takayama. Takayama used to be a rarely-visited mountain town only a decade ago but it has become one of the northwest’s most beloved destinations in the past few years. Within minutes of arriving, you will recognize that there are few towns as lovely or friendly as Takayama. You'll wish you lived here by the time your tour ends! Takayama is home to one of the most popular festivals in all of Japan and you can visit the parade floats all year round at the Festival Floats Exhibition Hall. Stroll through the old quarter to marvel at sake distilleries and samurai houses or visit the nearby Hida Folk Village to get a sense of what traditional farm life was like. Get lost in the quaint atmosphere strolling Takayama’s narrow streets or visiting the stalls during the morning farmers market along the riverbank. While in town, be sure to sample some Hida beef, which is as marvelously marbled (and delicious) as famous Kobe beef.

In coastal Kanazawa, you’ll witness one of the best historical centres in all of Japan. Unlike many of Japan’s cities, Kanazawa avoided Allied bombardment during World War II, meaning most of its historical sites are well-preserved in their original forms. The crown jewel of Kanazawa is Kenroku-en, a magnificent castle garden that ranks as one of the three best gardens in all of Japan. Stroll through its manicured lanes and marvel at the sheer variety of flowers, trees, and toro or stone lanterns. After seeing Kenroku-en, cross a pedestrian bridge to visit the gorgeously-reconstructed Kanazawa Castle. Later, visit the samurai and geisha districts with their wood-slated exteriors and traditional courtyards. Don’t forget to enjoy some sushi while you visit this coastal city. Kanazawa’s sushi competes with Tokyo in terms of quality, but is a fraction of the cost.

This brief escape to northwestern Honshu on a Japanese vacation will beguile you with its pastoral charm and stunning history.

Day 2

Takayama to Kanazawa

Start your tour today with a visit to Takayama Morning Market. Enjoy walking around the bustling the market, where a wide array of local specialties and other products are available. Also take a short stroll in the old town area called Kami-Sannomachi. Then depart from Takayama and drive to Shirakawago. Visit the Shirakawago Observatory to enjoy an elevated view of the World Heritage-registered thatch-roofed village of Shirakawago. Great for photography! Enjoy lunch at a Thatched Roof House where you can taste delicious regional cuisine dishes you can only enjoy in the countryside. After lunch you will head over to Wada Residence (traditional thatch-roofed farmhouse). This is one of the thatch-roofed houses, also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Look around and be fascinated by the culture and history of the village. After the tour drive from Shirakawago to Kanazawa and enjoy seeing rural Japanese scenery such as the manmade Miboro Dam and the Hakusan Mountains. You might transfer via the expressway instead of the scenic route, depending on traffic conditions. Arrive at your hotel in Kanazawa in the evening.
